Step-by-step

Power off the device
1 minEnsure the Surface Pro 2 is completely shut down and unplugged from the power adapter.

Heat the glass perimeter
3 minApply heat around the outer edges of the display with a heat gun for 2 to 3 minutes to soften the adhesive.

Attach a suction cup
1 minPlace a suction cup on the lower left corner of the screen and press down to seal it.

Insert an opening pick
2 minPull up on the suction cup to create a small gap, then slide a plastic opening pick under the glass edge.

Slice the bottom adhesive
3 minSlide the opening pick carefully along the bottom edge to cut through the display adhesive.

Slice the right edge adhesive
3 minMove the pick around the bottom-right corner and slide it up along the right edge of the frame.

Slice the top edge adhesive
3 minCarefully slide the pick across the top edge, taking caution near the web camera and sensors.

Slice the left edge adhesive
3 minContinue sliding the pick down the left edge until all surrounding adhesive is fully separated.

Lift the display assembly
2 minGently swing the top edge of the display assembly up like a book, taking care not to strain the ribbon cables.

Unlatch the display ribbon cable
1 minUse a plastic spudger to lift the retaining flap on the display ZIF connector.

Disconnect the display cable
1 minGently pull the display ribbon cable straight out from its motherboard socket.

Unlatch the digitizer ribbon cable
1 minFlip up the small retaining latch securing the digitizer ribbon cable connector.

Disconnect the digitizer cable
1 minPull the digitizer cable out of its connector to free the display completely.

Remove the old screen assembly
1 minLift the damaged display panel away from the main magnesium chassis and set it aside.

Scrape away old adhesive
5 minUse a plastic opening tool to scrape off all remaining adhesive tape from the frame perimeter.

Clean the frame rim
3 minWipe the frame edges with isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth to remove dirt and residue.

Apply new adhesive strips
4 minPeel the backing and lay down pre-cut adhesive strips precisely around the edges of the chassis frame.

Connect the replacement display cable
2 minInsert the main display cable of the new screen into the socket and press down the lock lever.

Connect the replacement digitizer cable
2 minSlide the digitizer ribbon cable firmly into its ZIF connector and secure the lock latch.

Press the screen into the frame
2 minAlign the new screen assembly over the frame and press down firmly around the edges to lock the adhesive.
