Step-by-step

Power down the iPad Mini 5
1 minPress and hold the top power button and either volume button until the slider appears. Slide to completely power off the device before beginning.

Heat the front glass perimeter
3 minUse a heat gun or hair dryer to warm the outer edges of the display for 2 to 3 minutes to soften the adhesive underneath.

Attach a suction cup to the glass
2 minPlace a suction cup on the lower portion of the screen just above the Home button and press firmly to secure it.

Create a gap with the suction cup
2 minPull up on the suction cup with firm, constant pressure to create a small opening between the front glass and the rear aluminum enclosure.

Insert an opening pick under the screen
2 minSlide a thin guitar pick into the gap created by the suction cup along the lower edge.

Slice through the left edge adhesive
3 minSlide the guitar pick carefully along the left side of the device to cut through the screen adhesive.

Slice through the top edge adhesive
3 minMove the pick along the top edge, taking care not to insert it too deep near the front camera assembly.

Slice through the right edge adhesive
3 minSlice down the right side of the screen carefully to avoid damaging the display flex cables located on this edge.

Slice through the bottom edge adhesive
3 minCarefully slice along the bottom edge, inserting the pick no deeper than 3 mm to avoid severing the Home button flex cable.

Open the display like a book
2 minGently lift the left side of the display assembly and swing it open to the right side like a book cover.

Unscrew the display cable shield
3 minUse a precision screwdriver to remove the three screws securing the metal EMI shield over the logic board connectors.

Remove the metal EMI shield
1 minUse tweezers or plastic prying tools to lift the metal shield off the logic board and set it aside.

Disconnect the battery connector
2 minPry the battery connector straight up from its socket on the logic board using a plastic spudger to cut power.

Disconnect the display cables
2 minDisconnect the LCD and digitizer flex cables from the logic board using a plastic prying tool.

Separate the display assembly
1 minLift the display assembly off the rear case and store it in a safe, dust-free location.

Apply isopropyl alcohol around the battery
3 minApply a few drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol around the edges of the battery to weaken the factory adhesive.

Pry up the battery edges
6 minSlide a wide plastic card or flat prying tool under the battery edges to slowly slice through the softened adhesive.

Lift the old battery from the case
2 minGently lift the battery out of the enclosure once the adhesive is fully released. Take care not to bend or puncture the cell.

Clean the battery cavity
4 minWipe away remaining adhesive residue inside the rear case using a lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

Apply adhesive to the new battery
3 minPeel the protective backing off new adhesive strips and press them firmly onto the backside of the replacement battery.

Install the new battery
2 minAlign the replacement battery in the rear case and press it firmly into place to adhere it to the frame.

Reconnect the display cables
3 minAlign and snap the display and digitizer flex connectors into their sockets on the logic board.

Reconnect the battery
2 minPress the battery connector down onto its logic board socket until it snaps into position.

Reattach the metal EMI shield
3 minPlace the metal bracket back over the connectors and tighten the three screws to secure it.

Apply new perimeter adhesive
4 minApply pre-cut screen adhesive strips along the lip of the rear aluminum housing.

Seal the display assembly
3 minAlign the screen with the iPad body and gently press along all edges to secure the glass in place.
