Power Off the iPad
1 minPress and hold the top power button until the slider appears, then slide to turn off the iPad completely.

Heat the Front Glass Edges
3 minApply a heated iOpener or heat gun around the perimeter of the front glass for 2-3 minutes to soften the display adhesive.

Attach Suction Cup
1 minPress a suction cup onto the top left corner of the front glass near the bezel frame.

Insert Opening Pick
2 minPull up firmly on the suction cup to create a small gap, then slide an opening pick between the glass and bezel.

Slice Around Glass Perimeter
5 minSlide opening picks around the edges of the display to cut through the adhesive, stopping before the bottom right corner.

Open Front Glass Assembly
2 minGently swing the top edge of the glass open like a book cover toward the right side of the device.

Remove Display Panel Screws
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the four corner screws securing the LCD panel.

Lift the LCD Panel
2 minInsert a spudger beneath the top edge of the LCD panel and carefully pry it up from the frame.

Fold Down LCD Panel
1 minFlip the LCD panel downward over the home button edge so it rests flat on the opened front glass.

Unscrew EMI Shield Plate
4 minRemove the 16 Phillips #00 screws holding the large metal EMI shield to the body.

Remove EMI Shield
2 minLift the metal shield out of the casing and set it aside to expose the logic board.

Disconnect Battery Connector
2 minRemove the single Phillips screw securing the battery contact, then insert a plastic pick underneath to isolate the circuit.

Disconnect LCD Flex Cable
1 minUse the flat end of a spudger to pry the LCD connector straight up from its socket on the logic board.

Disconnect Digitizer Flex Cable
2 minPry up the digitizer connector and remove the entire front glass and LCD assembly from the chassis.

Soften Rear Battery Adhesive
3 minApply heat to the back aluminum case directly behind the battery using a heat gun or heated pad for 2 minutes.

Apply Isopropyl Alcohol
2 minDrip a few drops of 99% isopropyl alcohol around the outer edges of the battery to weaken the adhesive bonds.

Pry Up the Battery
5 minWork a flexible plastic card under the edge of the battery, gradually cutting through the underlying tape.

Remove the Defective Battery
1 minLift the battery out of the iPad frame, taking care not to bend or puncture the cell.

3 minWipe the inside of the aluminum casing with isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth until clear of old adhesive.
