Step-by-step

Power Off the iPad
1 minPress and hold the power button and either volume button, then slide to power off the device completely.

Heat the Display Edges
3 minApply heat around the entire front perimeter of the iPad using a heat gun set to low heat for two to three minutes to soften the display adhesive.

Apply a Suction Cup
1 minPlace a suction cup near the bottom edge of the glass screen, avoiding the home/touch sensor area.

Insert Opening Picks
2 minPull up on the suction cup until a tiny gap forms, then insert a thin guitar pick under the edge of the glass.

Slice the Display Adhesive
5 minSlide guitar picks around all four edges of the device to cut through the perimeter adhesive. Do not insert picks deeper than 4mm near the right edge.

Open the Display Assembly
2 minGently swing the display open from the left edge like a book, resting it against a stable object so as not to strain the delicate cables.

Disconnect the Battery
3 minRemove the screw securing the battery connector to the logic board and slide a plastic card underneath the connector to isolate power.

Unscrew Display Cable Shield
2 minRemove the tri-point or Phillips screws securing the metal shield over the display and digitizer connectors.

2 minUse a spudger to disconnect the power button / Touch ID flex cable from the main logic board.

Unscrew Bracket Screws
3 minRemove the small Phillips screws holding the internal metal bracket behind the top power button.

Remove Power Button Bracket
2 minUse fine tweezers to remove the metal power button retaining bracket from the internal enclosure.

Peel and Lift Damaged Power Button Cable
3 minGently pry up the power button assembly and peel its ribbon cable from the inner frame adhesive using a plastic tool.

Install New Power Button Assembly
3 minPosition the replacement power button assembly into the top frame cutout, pressing the flex cable flush against the frame.

Secure Power Button Bracket and Connect Cable
4 minReinstall the internal metal bracket with screws, then snap the power button flex connector firmly back onto the logic board.
