Step-by-step

Heat the perimeter of the display
3 minApply a heated iOpener or heat gun around the front edges of the iPad Air 3 for two minutes to soften the adhesive beneath the glass.

Attach a suction cup near the bottom edge
2 minPlace a suction cup on the lower glass assembly, slightly above the Home button, and press firmly to create a seal.

Insert an opening pick under the glass
2 minPull up on the suction cup to create a small gap, then slide a thin opening pick into the gap between the glass and the outer frame.

Slice through the screen adhesive
5 minSlide the opening pick carefully along all four sides of the iPad to cut through the display adhesive. Keep the pick shallow on the right side to avoid damaging the display flex cables.

Open the display panel like a book
2 minGently hinge the display open from the left side toward the right. Rest the panel upright without straining the attached ribbon cables.

Insert a battery blocker card

10 minApply solder flux and use a fine-tip soldering iron to desolder the port flex ribbon pads directly from the logic board trace points.

Solder the new Lightning port assembly
10 minAlign the replacement port ribbon onto the board contacts and solder each pad securely in place using fresh solder.

Reattach the display cables and test Pencil charging
4 minTemporarily reconnect the display cables, remove the battery blocker, and plug in an Apple Pencil to confirm it detects and charges.

Apply new adhesive and seal the display
5 minClean remaining old adhesive off the frame, install fresh pre-cut adhesive strips, and firmly press the display panel back into the frame.
