Overview
Step-by-step
- 1
Heat the display edges
3 minApply a heat gun or hair dryer around the perimeter of the front glass for two minutes. This softens the adhesive securing the display to the frame.
- 2
Attach suction cup
2 minPlace a suction cup near the top edge of the front glass. Pull upward firmly to create a small gap between the glass and the aluminum enclosure.
- 3
Insert opening pick
2 minSlide a plastic opening pick into the gap created by the suction cup. Keep the pick shallow to avoid damaging internal component ribbons.
- 4
Slice perimeter adhesive
5 minSlide the pick carefully around all four sides of the iPad to cut through the adhesive seal. Insert additional picks in the corners to prevent re-sealing.
- 5
Open display assembly
2 minGently lift the top edge of the display and pivot it open towards the right edge like a book. Do not separate the screen completely yet.
- 6
Unscrew logic board shield
3 minRemove the retaining screws securing the metal shield over the logic board connectors using a precision screwdriver. Set the shield aside.
- 7
Disconnect battery cable
2 minUse the flat end of a plastic spudger to lift the battery connector straight off the logic board. This cuts power to prevent electrical damage.
- 8
Disconnect display cables
3 minPry up the display press connectors from the logic board with a spudger. Fully remove the display assembly and store it in a safe place.
- 9
Unscrew Pencil charger bracket
3 minLocate the magnetic Pencil charging module along the internal side rail. Remove the screws securing its protective metal bracket.
- 10
Disconnect Pencil charger flex
2 minUse a spudger to gently pop the Pencil charger flex cable connector off its logic board socket.
- 11
Pry out charging pad
2 minInsert a plastic spudger beneath the magnetic charging pad and pry it off the interior frame wall. Remove the failed module.
- 12
Install new charging module
2 minAlign the replacement Apple Pencil charging module flush against the side rail slot. Press firmly to engage any adhesive backing.
- 13
Secure charger and reconnect
5 minAttach the flex cable connector to the logic board and reinstall the metal bracket with its screws. Reconnect the display and battery before closing.
