Step-by-step

Power down the iPad
1 minPress and hold the top power button and either volume button until the power-off slider appears. Slide to completely switch off the device.

Heat the front glass edges
3 minUse a heat gun on low setting to warm the outer perimeter of the glass for 2 to 3 minutes. This softens the strong display adhesive beneath.

Attach a suction cup
2 minPress a suction cup onto the bottom center edge of the glass, just above the home button. Pull upward gently to create a slight gap.

Insert a guitar pick
2 minPush a plastic guitar pick into the gap between the glass screen and the outer aluminum frame. Keep the pick shallow to avoid damaging internal ribbons.

Slice perimeter adhesive
5 minSlide guitar picks around the left, top, and right edges of the frame to cut through the display adhesive. Leave picks in place to prevent re-sticking.

Open the digitizer panel
2 minGently lift the front glass from the left side and swing it open toward the right like a book. Avoid straining the digitizer cables on the right edge.

Unscrew the LCD display
3 minUse a Phillips #000 screwdriver to remove the four corner screws holding the LCD panel to the interior housing.

Pivot the LCD screen
2 minCarefully lift the top edge of the LCD panel and fold it forward over the lower home button area to reveal the display connectors.

Remove display bracket screws
2 minUnscrew the Phillips screws securing the metal display cable shield to the main logic board.

Detach display bracket
1 minUse precision tweezers to lift out the metal shield covering the battery, digitizer, and LCD flex connections.

Disconnect the battery cable
2 minSlide a plastic spudger beneath the battery flex connector to isolate power before touching other components.

Disconnect LCD and digitizer cables
3 minGently pry up the LCD and digitizer flex connectors from the logic board using the flat end of a plastic spudger. Set the LCD panel aside.

Heat the home button bracket
2 minApply light heat to the lower exterior glass directly over the home button for 1 minute to soften the internal bracket glue.

Remove the home button bracket
2 minUnscrew and lift off the metal bracket covering the back of the home button assembly on the digitizer glass.

Detach the home button assembly
3 minGently peel the home button flex cable and gasket away from the inside of the front glass using a plastic spudger.

Install the new home button
4 minAlign the replacement home button assembly into the glass cutout, seat the rubber gasket evenly, and re-secure the metal bracket with its screws.
