Step-by-step

Heat the glass perimeter
3 minApply a heated iOpener or heat gun around the edges of the iPad screen for 2-3 minutes to soften the display adhesive.

Attach a suction cup
1 minPlace a suction cup near the top edge of the front glass and press firmly to create a seal.

Insert an opening pick
2 minPull up on the suction cup to create a small gap and slide an opening pick under the glass edge.

Slice the perimeter adhesive
5 minSlide opening picks around the top, left, and right edges to cut through the display adhesive.

Open the digitizer glass
2 minGently lift the front glass up from the left side and swing it open like a book toward the right side.

Remove the LCD corner screws
3 minUnscrew the four Phillips screws located at each corner of the LCD panel.

Lift the LCD panel
2 minCarefully lift the top edge of the LCD panel and tilt it toward the bottom edge to reveal the connector shield.

Remove the battery screw
2 minUnscrew the single Phillips screw securing the battery contact pad to the logic board.

Insert a battery blocker
1 minSlide a thin plastic battery blocker card under the battery connector logic board contact to disconnect power.

Remove the cable shield
2 minUnscrew the three Phillips screws holding the display cable bracket shield and remove the bracket.

Disconnect the LCD cable
2 minUse a plastic spudger to pry the LCD connector straight up from its socket on the logic board.

Disconnect digitizer and home button flexes
2 minDisconnect the digitizer cable and home button extension flex cable connectors from the logic board.

Heat the home button bracket
2 minApply mild heat from a heat gun to the front lower glass surface to loosen the home button adhesive.

Pry off the home button bracket
3 minUse a spudger to carefully separate the metal home button bracket from the inside of the front glass.

Detach the home button assembly
3 minUse fine tweezers to gently lift the home button gasket and flex cable off the glass.

Install the replacement home button
4 minAlign the new home button into the glass cutout, secure the gasket adhesive, and reinstall the metal bracket.
