Step-by-step

Heat front glass edges
3 minApply a heat gun or hair dryer along the outer edges of the front glass for 2 to 3 minutes to soften the perimeter adhesive.

Attach suction cup to screen
1 minPlace a suction cup near the top edge of the front glass and pull upward firmly to create a small gap between the glass and frame.

Insert opening pick
1 minSlide a thin plastic guitar pick into the gap created by the suction cup to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Slice display adhesive
4 minCarefully slide opening picks around the top and side edges to cut through the adhesive, keeping clear of the bottom right home button cable area.

Open digitizer glass
1 minGently lift the glass digitizer from the left side and swing it open like a book cover.

Remove LCD corner screws
3 minPeel back the electrical tape covering the display corners and unfasten the four Phillips screws securing the LCD screen.

Fold down LCD panel
2 minGently lift the top edge of the LCD panel and tilt it down toward the bottom of the iPad to reveal the shield underneath.

3 minTurn the iPad over and apply heat directly to the back of the aluminum case behind the battery for 3 minutes to soften the underlying glue.

Apply isopropyl alcohol
2 minDispense a few drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol under the outer edges of the battery cells.

Pry up battery cells
5 minSlide a plastic prying card underneath the battery cells, slowly working around the perimeter to slice through the softened adhesive.

Remove spent battery
