Step-by-step

Power off the iPad
1 minPress and hold the top power button, then slide the screen toggle to completely power off the device.

Heat the screen edges
3 minApply a heated iOpener or heat gun around the outer edges of the glass digitizer for two minutes to soften the adhesive.

Attach a suction cup
1 minPlace a suction cup near the bottom edge of the glass right above the home button.

Pry open a gap
2 minPull up gently on the suction cup while inserting a thin opening pick under the glass along the right edge.

Slice perimeter adhesive
5 minSlide opening picks along the right, top, and bottom edges to cut through the display adhesive. Avoid sliding picks deeper than 3mm near the lower right edge to protect the home button cable.

Open the digitizer
2 minGently hinge the glass digitizer open from the left edge like a book cover.

Unscrew the LCD panel
2 minUse a Phillips screwdriver to remove the four corner screws securing the LCD panel.

Lift the LCD panel
2 minCarefully lift the top edge of the LCD panel and tilt it up toward the bottom of the iPad.

Remove the display cable bracket
2 minRemove the three Phillips screws securing the metal display cable shield and lift the shield out with tweezers.

Disconnect the LCD flex cable
1 minUse the flat end of a plastic spudger to disconnect the LCD connector from the logic board.

Disconnect the digitizer and home button cables
2 minPry up the two digitizer connectors and the home button flex cable connector from the logic board.

Set aside the digitizer
1 minLift the glass digitizer completely away from the chassis and place it face-down on a clean surface.

Heat the home button assembly
2 minApply mild heat from a heat gun to the front face of the digitizer glass beneath the home button for 30 seconds.

Peel back the bracket tape
1 minUse tweezers to carefully peel away the black tape covering the metal home button bracket.

Pry up the home button bracket
2 minInsert a spudger under the metal retaining bracket and pry it loose from the digitizer glass.

Remove the home button assembly
2 minGently press the home button face inward from the front of the glass while peeling up the home button ribbon cable.
