Step-by-step

Power down the iPad
1 minEnsure the iPad is powered off completely and the battery is discharged below 25%. Disconnect all external cables before starting.

Heat the front glass edges
3 minApply a heat gun or heating pad around the outer edges of the display screen for 2 to 3 minutes. This softens the strong display adhesive.

Attach suction cup
1 minPlace a suction cup on the lower section of the screen, slightly above the home button. Press down firmly to secure the suction seal.

Insert opening pick
2 minPull up on the suction cup to create a tiny gap between the glass and metal frame. Slide an opening pick into the gap.

Slice display adhesive
5 minSlide the pick around the perimeter of the glass to slice through adhesive, leaving picks in corners to prevent re-sticking. Keep the pick shallow near the home button.

Open the digitizer glass
2 minHinge the front glass digitizer open toward the left side like a book cover. Rest the glass upright against a box or wall to avoid straining flex cables.

Unscrew LCD corners
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the four corner screws holding down the LCD panel. Note that the top screws are slightly longer than the bottom ones.

Fold down LCD screen
2 minGently pry up the top edge of the LCD display using a spudger. Flip the LCD downward toward the home button so it rests on the glass.

Remove cable shield screws
2 minRemove the three Phillips #00 screws securing the metal display cable shield to the logic board. Keep track of each screw's location.

Detach display cable shield
1 minUse tweezers to lift and remove the metal shield covering the display ribbon cable connectors.

Disconnect LCD cable
1 minPry the LCD ribbon cable connector straight up from its socket on the logic board using the flat end of a spudger.

Disconnect digitizer cables
2 minDisconnect the two digitizer flex ribbon cables from their board connectors. Remove the front panel and LCD assembly from the chassis.

Insert battery isolator pick
2 minSlide a plastic battery isolation pick under the battery contact screw terminal on the logic board to disconnect power.

Apply adhesive solvent
3 minApply high-concentration isopropyl alcohol or battery adhesive remover along the edges of both battery cells. Let it sit for 2 minutes to soften the glue.

Pry left battery cell
4 minInsert a wide plastic opening card beneath the outer edge of the left battery cell. Slowly push inward using steady, flat pressure to separate the adhesive.

Pry right battery cell
4 minSlide the plastic opening card underneath the right battery cell. Work carefully to avoid applying leverage directly against the logic board.

Remove old battery
1 minLift the completely freed battery out of the rear aluminum casing. Store the old battery safely for recycling.

Clean casing adhesive
3 minScrape away remaining glue from the casing using a spudger. Wipe the inner tray clean with isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth.

Apply new battery adhesive
2 minApply new pre-cut adhesive strips onto the back of the replacement battery. Peel off the clear protective film backing.

Install new battery
2 minAlign the battery terminal contacts with the logic board socket pad. Lower the battery into the casing and press firmly down on the cells.

Remove battery isolator
1 minPull out the plastic battery isolation pick from beneath the terminal contact to reconnect power to the system.

Reconnect digitizer cables
2 minAlign and press the two digitizer flex cables directly into their logic board sockets until they snap in.

Reconnect LCD cable
1 minPress the LCD ribbon connector firmly back onto its socket on the logic board.

Reinstall shield plate
2 minReposition the metal display shield cover over the connectors and reinstall the three Phillips #00 screws.

Secure LCD display
2 minFold the LCD panel back into place over the body. Install the four corner screws using your Phillips #00 screwdriver.

Apply screen adhesive strips
3 minApply double-sided adhesive strips around the perimeter of the aluminum frame and peel off the protective backing strips.

Close display glass
2 minAlign the glass digitizer assembly carefully over the frame and press down firmly around all edges to secure the seal.
