Step-by-step

Power down the iPad
1 minPress and hold the sleep/wake button until the power slider appears, then slide to turn off the device completely.

Heat the front glass edges
3 minApply heat around the perimeter of the glass with a heat gun for 2 to 3 minutes to soften the frame adhesive.

Attach the suction cup
1 minPlace a suction cup on the top right corner of the front glass and pull upward gently to create a gap.

Insert an opening pick
2 minSlide a thin plastic opening pick into the gap under the glass. Take care not to insert the pick more than a quarter inch.

Slice the perimeter adhesive
4 minSlide picks carefully along all sides of the frame. Avoid the bottom right corner to prevent damaging the Wi-Fi antenna.

Hinge open the front glass
1 minGently lift the right side of the front glass and open it toward the left side like a book cover.

Unscrew the LCD panel
2 minRemove the four Phillips #00 screws located at each corner of the inner LCD display.

Flip the LCD panel
1 minLift the top edge of the LCD display and flip it forward over the front glass onto a clean cloth.

Disconnect the display cable
2 minUse a plastic spudger to lift the retaining latch on the display ZIF connector, then slide the display cable out.

Disconnect the digitizer cable
2 minFlip up the lock levers on the two digitizer cable ZIF connectors and remove the ribbon cables from the logic board.

Remove the front glass assembly
1 minLift the entire front glass digitizer assembly off the iPad chassis and set it on a padded workspace.

Pry up the home button bracket
2 minUse tweezers or a spudger to carefully peel the metal retaining bracket off the bottom inside of the glass panel.

Detach the home button flex cable
2 minSlide a spudger under the home button ribbon cable contact pads to unstick them from the glass frame.

Install the new home button
2 minPlace the new home button assembly into the circular glass cutout, verifying that the button is flush and aligned from the front.

Secure the button bracket
2 minApply fresh double-sided adhesive and press the metal bracket securely over the new home button ribbon cable.

Reconnect digitizer and display cables
3 minSlide the digitizer and display ribbon cables fully into their board connectors and snap the ZIF locking latches down.

Reinstall the LCD panel
2 minFlip the LCD panel back into the aluminum frame and reinstall the four corner Phillips screws.

Seal the front glass
4 minApply new custom-cut adhesive strips along the frame perimeter, align the glass panel, and press firmly down to seal.
