   Power off the Kindle

   Press and hold the power button, then tap Power Off on the screen to completely shut down the tablet.

   Eject the microSD card tray

   Insert a SIM eject tool or fine pick into the microSD slot hole to pop out the card tray.

   Warm the rear frame perimeter

   Apply mild heat with a heat gun along the outer plastic edges of the back cover for 60 seconds to soften the internal clips.

   Attach a suction cup to the back cover

   Press a suction cup onto the lower corner of the rear cover near the charging port and pull gently upward.

   Insert an opening pick into the seam

   Slide a thin plastic opening pick into the gap created between the plastic back cover and the display assembly.

   Unclip the bottom edge

   Slide the pick across the bottom edge of the frame to release the plastic retaining clips.

   Unclip the left edge

   Work the pick along the left side of the tablet, popping each clip loose as you move upward.

   Slide the pick along the right side frame to free the clips along the side seam.

   Pry carefully along the top edge around the power button and headphone jack to release the remaining clips.

    Remove the rear cover

    Lift the plastic back cover straight off the chassis and place it aside.

    Unscrew the battery connector shield

    Use a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the screws holding the metal bracket over the battery connector.

    Remove the metal shield

    Grasp the metal bracket with tweezers and lift it off the motherboard.

    Disconnect the battery cable

    Insert the flat end of a spudger beneath the battery press connector and pop it straight up off its socket.

    Warm the battery adhesive

    Heat the center rear frame opposite the battery for 60 seconds on low setting to loosen the adhesive backing.

    Pry the battery free

    Slide a flat plastic pry card beneath the battery from the long edge, slowly slicing through the adhesive.

    Remove the old battery

    Lift the battery out of the metal chassis frame, taking care not to bend or puncture it.

    Clean adhesive residue

    Apply 91% isopropyl alcohol to a microfiber cloth and wipe down the battery well inside the chassis.

    Apply new adhesive strips

    Peel the backing off new adhesive strips and press them firmly into place inside the battery compartment.

    Position the replacement battery

    Set the new battery into the housing, aligning its cable near the motherboard socket, and press down evenly.

    Press the battery connector straight down onto its motherboard socket until it snaps into place.
