Step-by-step

Power down the device
1 minPress and hold the Power button, then select 'Power off' on the screen to completely shut down the device.

Remove the rear cover
1 minInsert a plastic opening tool or fingernail into the notch at the top of the phone and lift the rear cover off.

Remove the battery
1 minPry the battery up from the recess near the bottom of the battery compartment and remove it.

Unscrew the midframe
3 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the 10 screws securing the midframe to the display assembly.

Detach the midframe
3 minInsert a plastic spudger between the front display assembly and the midframe, sliding along the edges to unclip it.

Disconnect the display flex connector
2 minUse the flat end of a spudger to gently pop the display connector up off the motherboard.

Disconnect upper flex connectors
2 minDisconnect the front-facing camera and headphone jack assembly flex cables from the motherboard.

Disconnect the coaxial antenna cable
2 minUse tweezers or a spudger to carefully unclip the gold coaxial antenna cable from the lower portion of the motherboard.

Remove the motherboard
2 minGently lift the motherboard from the top edge and remove it from the phone chassis.

Peel up the volume button flex cable
3 minUse tweezers to carefully lift and detach the original volume button flex cable from the inner left sidewall of the chassis.

Install the new volume button cable
3 minAlign the replacement volume button flex cable into the slot on the inner frame and press firmly to adhere.

Reseat the motherboard
2 minCarefully place the motherboard back into the frame, making sure no flex cables are trapped beneath it.

Reconnect internal connectors
3 minSnap the display flex, camera flex, headphone jack, and coaxial antenna cables back onto their motherboard sockets.

Reattach the midframe
3 minAlign the midframe over the phone and press down firmly around the edges until it snaps, then reinstall the 10 Phillips #00 screws.

Reinsert the battery and rear cover
2 minPlace the battery back into its housing, snap the rear cover on, and power on the phone to test the volume buttons.
