Step-by-step

Turn off the phone
1 minPress and hold the power button until the menu appears, then tap Power Off. Ensure the device is entirely powered down before starting.

Eject the SIM card tray
1 minInsert a SIM eject pin or thin paperclip into the hole beside the SIM tray on the upper left edge. Press firmly until the tray pops out, then remove it completely.

Heat the rear cover edges
2 minApply heat to the perimeter of the back cover using a hair dryer or heat gun for 1 to 2 minutes to soften the frame adhesive.

Unclip and lift the back cover
4 minAttach a suction cup near the bottom edge and insert a plastic pick into the gap created. Slide the pick around the perimeter to release the plastic clips and adhesive.

Disconnect the fingerprint sensor
2 minSlightly tilt the back panel to access the fingerprint sensor cable without straining it. Use a spudger to pop the fingerprint reader connector off the motherboard bracket.

Unscrew the motherboard protective cover
3 minUse a Phillips #000 screwdriver to remove the screws holding the plastic top shield over the motherboard.

Remove the motherboard shield
2 minInsert the point of a spudger under the notch of the motherboard cover and gently pry it up to remove it from the phone.

Disconnect the battery cable
1 minUse the flat end of a spudger to disconnect the battery press connector from the motherboard to safely cut power.

Disconnect the power button flex cable
2 minLocate the power and volume button ribbon cable press-connector on the right edge of the motherboard and detach it using a plastic spudger.

Peel out the damaged power button cable
3 minSlide a thin pair of tweezers under the power button flex cable stuck to the inner side frame. Gently peel the flex assembly away from the chassis.

Clean the power button mounting track
2 minDab a cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol and wipe the inner frame track clean of old adhesive residue and dust.

Position the new power button flex cable
3 minPeel off the protective adhesive backing on the replacement cable and press the button contact pads firmly into the side frame recess.

Reconnect the button cable and battery
2 minPress the power button ribbon connector back into its motherboard socket, then reconnect the battery cable.

Reattach the motherboard shield
3 minSet the motherboard cover back in place and reinsert all Phillips #000 screws until snug.

Attach the fingerprint reader and close the back panel
4 minReconnect the fingerprint reader flex cable to the board, line up the back cover with the frame, and press firmly around all edges until it snaps securely into place.
