Step-by-step

Power off the Moto G2
1 minPress and hold the power button, then select Power Off on the screen. Ensure the device is completely powered down before proceeding.

Remove the back cover
1 minInsert a plastic opening pick or thumbnail into the USB port notch at the bottom. Pry gently upward around the edges to snap off the outer rear cover.

Remove SIM and SD cards
1 minPull out any micro-SIM cards and the microSD card from their respective slots on the back frame. Store them in a safe location.

Unscrew the rear midframe
3 minUse a Torx T3 screwdriver to remove all 14 screws holding the plastic inner midframe to the phone body.

Pry open the midframe edge clips
2 minInsert a spudger into the seam between the front glass bezel and the midframe. Slide the tool along the edges to disengage all retaining clips.

Separate the midframe cover
1 minLift the plastic midframe straight off the chassis and place it aside.

Disconnect the battery cable
1 minInsert a flat plastic spudger under the battery connector cable and lift it straight up off the motherboard socket.

Unplug the volume button flex connector
2 minUse the tip of a spudger to flip up the dark locking lever on the volume button ZIF socket, then pull the flex ribbon out.

Peel off the volume button ribbon
2 minGently slip precision tweezers under the volume button flex assembly attached to the inner frame edge and peel it free from adhesive.

Align and stick the new volume ribbon
2 minPeel the protective backing off the replacement volume button flex cable and press it firmly into position along the frame wall.

Connect the volume button ribbon
2 minSlide the new ribbon cable into the motherboard ZIF socket and press the locking latch down flat to secure it.

Reconnect the battery
1 minAlign the battery connector plug directly over its socket on the motherboard and press down until it clicks into place.

Snap the midframe back on
2 minPosition the plastic midframe over the chassis and press firmly along all edges until all internal clips click shut.

Reinstall the midframe screws
3 minReinsert and tighten all 14 Torx T3 screws into the perimeter of the midframe housing.

Reattach the back cover and cards
1 minReinsert your SIM and SD cards into their slots, then press the outer back cover onto the device until fully seated.
