Step-by-step

Power off the device
1 minPress and hold the power button, then select Power Off on the screen. Ensure the phone is entirely turned off before proceeding.

Remove the SIM tray and stylus
1 minInsert a SIM eject tool into the tray port to pop out the SIM card holder. Remove both the tray and the integrated stylus from the bottom slot.

Heat the back cover
2 minUse a heat gun or hair dryer on low heat along the rear edges for two minutes to soften the factory adhesive. Keep the heat source moving to avoid localized overheating.

Slice the rear adhesive
4 minPlace a suction cup near the bottom edge of the rear panel and pull up to create a gap. Insert a plastic opening pick and slide it around the perimeter to separate the cover.

Separate the back cover

Remove the midframe shield

Disconnect the battery
1 minUse the pointed end of a plastic spudger to pry the battery press-connector straight up from its motherboard socket. This prevents short circuits while working.

Disconnect the volume button flex
2 minLocate the volume button ribbon connector on the upper frame edge. Carefully snap the press-fit ZIF or motherboard connector out of place using a plastic tool.

Pry out the volume flex array
3 minApply a drop of isopropyl alcohol behind the flex cable to loosen the adhesive. Use fine-tip tweezers to gently peel the volume button contact strip away from the metal frame.

Pop out the physical button keys
2 minUse tweezers or a spudger to push the physical external volume key caps inward through their frame cutouts if replacing damaged external buttons.

Install the new volume assembly
3 minAlign the new volume button flex assembly along the inner rim of the housing and press firmly into place. Connect the flex cable back to its motherboard socket.
