Step-by-step

Power off the device
1 minPress and hold the power button on your Moto G9 Play, then select Power Off on screen.

Eject the SIM card tray
1 minInsert a SIM eject tool into the small hole on the left edge of the phone and remove the tray.

Heat the rear panel edges
2 minApply heat along the outer perimeter of the back cover for two minutes using a heat gun to soften the adhesive.

Pry open the rear panel
2 minInsert a plastic prying tool into the seam near the SIM slot to pop open the rear plastic clips.

Unclip the back panel perimeter
2 minSlide an opening pick around all edges of the phone frame until all internal clips release.

Unscrew the top motherboard bracket
2 minRemove the Phillips #00 screws securing the black plastic bracket over the motherboard.

Remove the top motherboard bracket
1 minLift the plastic motherboard shield up and away from the phone body.

Disconnect the fingerprint sensor
1 minUse a plastic spudger to gently pop the fingerprint reader flex cable off its motherboard connector.

Disconnect the battery cable
1 minPry the battery press connector straight up from the motherboard to cut power to the device.

Unscrew the lower speaker housing
2 minRemove the Phillips #00 screws holding the loudspeaker enclosure at the bottom of the frame.

Remove the lower speaker housing
1 minLift the bottom speaker cover off the frame and place it aside.

Disconnect the display flex cable
1 minUse your spudger to disconnect the display ribbon cable from the lower sub-board assembly.

Heat the front display assembly
3 minHeat the front glass edges evenly for three minutes using a heat gun set to medium heat.

Slice front glass adhesive
4 minAttach a suction cup to the top glass, pull upward slightly, and slide an opening pick under the screen border.

Remove the damaged screen
2 minThread the display ribbon cable through the frame slot and lift the cracked screen completely off.

Clean old frame adhesive
5 minScrape remaining adhesive and broken glass shards from the frame recess using isopropyl alcohol and a spudger.

Apply new screen adhesive
3 minApply double-sided adhesive strips along the entire perimeter of the internal frame ledge.

Mount the replacement screen
3 minFeed the new screen ribbon cable through the slot and press the display assembly firmly into the frame.

Reconnect display and battery cables
2 minSnap the display cable back onto the daughterboard and reconnect the battery flex cable to the motherboard.

Reattach motherboard and speaker brackets
3 minPlace the top shield and speaker housing back into position, then reinstall all Phillips screws.

Reconnect fingerprint sensor and snap back cover
3 minAttach the fingerprint ribbon, align the rear panel clips, and press firmly until the panel snaps into place.

1 minPush the SIM card tray back into its slot until flush with the side frame.
