Safety

Step-by-step

Power off the phone
1 minPress and hold the power button, then select Power Off on the screen to completely shut down the device.

Eject the SIM card tray
1 minInsert a SIM eject tool into the hole on the left edge of the phone to pop out the SIM tray.

Heat the rear panel
2 minApply a heat gun or heated iOpener around the edges of the back cover for two minutes to soften the adhesive.

Slice the back cover adhesive
4 minInsert a plastic opening pick under the bottom edge of the back cover and slide it along the perimeter to slice through the adhesive.

Remove the back cover
1 minGently lift the plastic rear panel up and off the phone frame.

Unscrew the midframe
3 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the screws holding the upper and lower plastic midframe sections in place.

Disconnect the fingerprint sensor
2 minSlightly lift the midframe and use a spudger to pry up the fingerprint reader flex connector from the logic board.

Detach the midframe
2 minUnclip the remaining plastic midframe clips from the chassis and remove the frame.

Disconnect the battery cable
1 minUse a plastic spudger to pry the battery connector straight up off the logic board to eliminate power.

Disconnect the display and interconnect cables
2 minPry up the press connectors for the display flex cable and sub-board extension ribbon from the logic board.

Unclip the coaxial antenna cables
2 minUse fine tweezers to gently lift the antenna cable heads straight off their press sockets on the board.

Remove logic board screws
2 minRemove any remaining Phillips screws anchoring the main logic board to the internal frame.

Lift out the logic board
2 minInsert a flat spudger underneath the top corner of the board and carefully lift it out of the housing.

Inspect the logic board under magnification
5 minExamine the board under a magnifying glass to check for cracked solder joints, damaged surface-mount components, or corrosion.

Apply flux to repair area
2 minDispense a small amount of liquid or gel flux onto the damaged component or solder pad.

Solder or reflow damaged components
10 minUse a fine-tip soldering iron or hot air station to reflow cold solder joints or replace faulted micro-components.

Clean board residue
3 minClean off flux and debris around the repaired section using high-purity isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush.
