Step-by-step

Power off the phone
1 minPress and hold the power button, then tap Power Off on the screen. Verify the device is completely powered down before continuing.

Remove the SIM tray
1 minInsert a SIM eject tool into the pinhole on the side of the frame. Press firmly until the tray pops out, then pull it clear of the device.

Heat the back cover
2 minApply heat around the perimeter of the back cover for two minutes using a heat gun or hair dryer. Keep the heat moving constantly to avoid localized burning.

Attach the suction cup
1 minPress a suction cup firmly onto the lower portion of the rear panel to form a tight seal.

Slice perimeter adhesive
3 minPull up on the suction cup to create a seam, then slide a plastic opening pick between the rear panel and frame. Slice along all four edges.

Pry open the rear cover
2 minGently lift the right side of the rear panel open like a book cover. Do not pull it away entirely yet, as a flex ribbon remains connected.

Unscrew the motherboard cover
3 minUse a Phillips #000 driver to remove the screws securing the upper plastic mainboard protective shield.

Remove the motherboard shield
1 minInsert the flat end of a spudger under the motherboard shield and lift it off the frame.

Disconnect the fingerprint sensor
1 minUse a plastic spudger to pop the fingerprint sensor ribbon connector off the motherboard. Lift the back cover away from the phone.

Disconnect the battery cable
1 minPry the battery press connector straight up off the motherboard terminal using a plastic spudger.

Unscrew the loudspeaker module
2 minRemove the Phillips screws holding the loudspeaker assembly to the bottom edge of the chassis.

Remove the loudspeaker module
1 minInsert a spudger under the edge of the loudspeaker unit and pry it up to remove it from the frame.

Disconnect interconnect cables
2 minDisconnect the main flex and display cables crossing over the battery using a plastic spudger, then fold them back.

Soften battery adhesive
2 minApply a few drops of isopropyl alcohol around the top and side borders of the battery. Wait ninety seconds for the adhesive to break down.

Unseat adhesive pull tabs
1 minLocate the battery pull-tab ends along the edge. Peel the clear outer tips away from the battery surface using tweezers.

Pull out adhesive strips
4 minGrasp one pull tab at a time and slowly pull it out horizontally at a flat angle. Continue applying constant tension until the strip slides out entirely.

Remove the battery
2 minInsert a flat plastic opening card beneath the battery and gently lift it out of the recess. Do not bend or puncture the battery cell.

Clean the battery tray
2 minMoisten a lint-free wipe with isopropyl alcohol and scrub away any remaining adhesive residue from the well.

Apply new adhesive strips
2 minLay fresh battery adhesive strips onto the underside of the replacement battery. Remove the protective backing film.

Install the new battery
1 minAlign the replacement battery into the battery compartment and press down firmly to set the adhesive.

Reconnect interconnect cables
2 minAlign and snap the display and main flex ribbon connectors back into their sockets on the motherboard.

Reinstall the loudspeaker
2 minPosition the loudspeaker assembly over the bottom frame and re-tighten the lower Phillips screws.

Reconnect fingerprint sensor
2 minHold the rear cover near the mainboard and attach the fingerprint sensor flex cable to its socket.

Reattach motherboard shield
2 minPlace the upper mainboard cover back into position and secure it with the Phillips screws.

Reseal the back panel
3 minApply a pre-cut replacement adhesive gasket around the frame perimeter, align the rear cover, and press firmly along all edges to seal.

Reinsert the SIM tray
1 minPush the SIM card tray back into its slot until flush with the phone's side rail.
