Step-by-step

Power off the phone
1 minPress and hold the power button, then select the option to completely shut down the device. Never work on a powered-on device.

Eject the SIM card tray
1 minInsert a SIM eject tool or thin paperclip into the hole next to the SIM tray on the side of the phone. Push firmly until the tray pops out, then pull it out completely.

Heat the rear cover edges
2 minUse a heat gun or hair dryer on low heat to warm the outer edges of the back panel for two minutes. This softens the factory adhesive holding the cover in place.

Attach a suction cup
2 minPress a suction cup firmly onto the lower portion of the rear glass. Pull upward gently to create a small gap between the rear cover and the frame.

Insert a plastic opening pick
2 minInsert a thin plastic pick into the gap created by the suction cup. Be careful not to slide the pick in deeper than 3mm to avoid damaging internal components.

Slice the adhesive perimeter
4 minSlide the plastic pick carefully along all four edges of the back cover to cut through the softened adhesive. Apply additional heat if the pick encounters heavy resistance.

Remove the rear cover
2 minGently lift the back cover off the chassis. Set the rear cover aside on a clean, scratch-free surface.

Unscrew the upper midframe
3 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the screws securing the protective upper plastic midframe overlaying the logic board.

Remove the upper midframe cover
2 minGently insert a spudger under the edge of the plastic midframe shield and lift it off the board. Store the shield and screws together.

Disconnect the battery flex cable
2 minUse the flat end of a plastic spudger to pry the battery connector straight up from its socket on the motherboard. This cuts power to the device completely.

Disconnect the display and ribbon cables
3 minPry up the display connector flex cable and the main interconnect flex cable from the logic board using a spudger tool.

Disconnect the front camera modules
2 minLocate the dual selfie camera flex connectors at the top of the logic board and detach them carefully with your spudger.

Unhook the antenna cables
2 minUse precision tweezers to lift the coaxial antenna cables straight up off their sockets near the edge of the motherboard.

Remove the logic board retaining screw
2 minUnscrew the single Phillips #00 screw securing the logic board to the inner aluminum chassis frame.

Pry out the logic board
3 minInsert a plastic spudger under the bottom edge of the logic board and gently lever it out of the phone frame. Handle the board only by its edges.
