Step-by-step

Power off the phone
1 minPress and hold the Power button until the menu appears, then select Power Off. Ensure the device is fully shut down before proceeding.

Remove the back cover
1 minInsert a plastic prying tool or fingernail into the small notch at the bottom edge of the phone. Pry up gently to unclip and lift away the rear panel.

Remove the battery
1 minLocate the fingernail notch at the bottom of the battery. Lift the battery up and out of its compartment.

Eject cards
1 minSlide out any installed nano-SIM card and microSD card from their respective slots above the battery bay.

Unscrew the midframe
3 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the 14 screws securing the plastic midframe to the phone body.

Pry up the midframe
2 minInsert a plastic spudger into the seam between the front display assembly and the inner frame. Work around the perimeter to release all retaining clips, then lift off the midframe.

Disconnect the volume flex cable
2 minUse a spudger to gently flip up the locking tab on the motherboard ZIF connector. Carefully pull the volume button flex ribbon out of the socket.

Peel off the volume flex assembly
2 minApply light warmth with a hair dryer for 10 seconds to loosen the adhesive beneath the volume flex pad. Slide precision tweezers under the pad and carefully lift it off the frame.

Remove physical volume rocker
1 minGently push the plastic external volume button rocker inward from the outside frame to pop it out of its slot.

Clean the button housing
2 minDampen a cotton swab with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and wipe away old adhesive residue and debris from the volume button recess.

Install the new volume rocker
1 minInsert the replacement plastic volume rocker into the housing slot from the inside of the frame until it sits flush.

Secure the new flex cable
2 minPeel the backing off the pre-applied adhesive on the replacement volume flex cable. Align the contacts with the frame recess and press firmly into place.

Reconnect the flex ribbon
1 minSlide the volume button flex ribbon back into the motherboard ZIF connector. Snap the locking tab down securely to lock the cable in place.

Reattach the midframe
2 minAlign the plastic midframe over the phone chassis and press down along the edges until all plastic clips snap into place.

Fasten the midframe screws
3 minReinstall and tighten the 14 Phillips #00 screws into the midframe until snug.

Reinsert cards and battery
1 minSlide your SIM and microSD cards back into their slots, then align the battery contacts and press the battery down into place.

Snap on the rear cover
1 minAlign the back cover over the rear of the phone and press firmly along all edges until it snaps completely closed.
