Step-by-step

Power off the phone
1 minPress and hold the power button until the option menu appears, then tap 'Power off'. Ensure the phone is completely shut down before starting.

Remove the SIM and microSD card tray
1 minInsert a SIM eject tool or paperclip into the small hole on the side of the tray. Push firmly until the tray pops out, then pull it out completely.

Pry off the back cover
2 minInsert a plastic prying tool or fingernail into the notch near the USB port. Gently pry upward around the perimeter to release the plastic clips and remove the cover.

Remove the upper midframe screws
3 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove all visible screws securing the upper midframe shield. Place screws on your magnetic mat to keep them organized.

Remove the lower speaker assembly screws
3 minUnscrew the remaining Phillips #00 screws holding the bottom speaker module in place. Note that one screw may be hidden under a white tamper sticker.

Detach the upper midframe shield
2 minInsert a spudger under the edge of the plastic upper midframe cover. Gently lift and remove it from the device frame.

Detach the bottom speaker module
2 minPry up the edges of the bottom speaker housing using a plastic opening tool and lift it away from the phone.

Disconnect the battery flex cable
1 minUse the flat end of a plastic spudger to pop the battery connector straight up off the motherboard motherboard socket.

Heat the battery adhesive
2 minApply gentle heat with a heat gun or hair dryer to the back side of the frame for 1 to 2 minutes to soften the battery adhesive.

Pry out the battery
4 minSlide a flat plastic card or wide spudger under the battery from the side. Slowly pry upward until the 5000 mAh battery releases from the adhesive.

Disconnect the display flex cable
1 minLocate the display ribbon cable on the motherboard. Pry up its ZIF press connector using your plastic spudger.

Disconnect the fingerprint sensor flex cable
1 minUnplug the small ribbon cable connector for the home button and fingerprint sensor from the lower circuit board.

Heat the front display glass
3 minWarm the edges of the front glass screen with a heat gun for 2 to 3 minutes to soften the adhesive holding the display to the frame.

Attach a suction cup to the glass
1 minPlace a suction cup on the lower half of the front display glass and press firmly to create a seal.

Insert opening picks under the screen
2 minPull up gently on the suction cup to create a small gap at the bottom edge. Insert a plastic opening pick into the gap.

Slice perimeter display adhesive
4 minSlide opening picks around all four sides of the front screen frame to break through the softened screen adhesive.

Lift and remove damaged display panel
2 minCarefully swing open the screen assembly, feeding the flex cables through their slots in the frame until the display is completely freed.

Clean old adhesive off frame
3 minScrape away lingering adhesive tape from the metal housing edges using tweezers, then wipe the perimeter clean with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol.

Apply new frame adhesive tape
4 minLay down fresh double-sided adhesive strips along the top, bottom, and side margins of the inner phone frame.

Mount the replacement screen assembly
3 minThread the new display and fingerprint flex cables through the frame slots. Align the display and press down firmly around the glass edges.

Reconnect display and fingerprint flex cables
2 minPress the screen flex cable and fingerprint sensor connectors straight down into their sockets until they click securely into place.

Reinstall battery and midframe assembly
4 minPlace the battery back in its cavity, reattach its flex cable, snap upper and lower midframe shields back in place, and replace all Phillips screws.
