Step-by-step

Power off the device
1 minPress and hold the power button until the option menu appears. Tap 'Power off' and wait for the screen to turn completely black.

Remove the rear shell
2 minInsert a plastic spudger into the notch at the bottom of the outer back cover. Gently pry the flexible cover away from the chassis.

Remove SIM and SD cards
1 minLocate the SIM card and microSD card slots on the side of the inner frame. Slide both cards out of their slots using your fingers.

Unscrew the internal midframe
5 minUse a Torx T3 screwdriver to remove the 14 screws holding the internal midframe. Keep track of all screws for reassembly.

Pry off the midframe
3 minInsert a plastic opening tool along the edge between the midframe and the front panel. Carefully unsnap and lift the midframe away.

Disconnect the battery cable
2 minLocate the battery flex connector on the lower section of the motherboard. Use a plastic spudger to gently pop the connector straight up.

Disconnect display flex cables
2 minUse tweezers or a spudger to carefully open the ZIF retention latch on the display connector. Slide the flex cable straight out from its socket.

Lift out the motherboard
3 minGently pry up the motherboard starting from the top edge. Carefully remove the board from the phone's plastic housing.

Desolder the old microphone
5 minApply a small amount of flux to the microphone joints at the bottom edge of the board. Use a soldering iron and desoldering wick to lift the damaged microphone.

Clean the solder contacts
2 minApply isopropyl alcohol to a cotton swab and clean leftover flux and debris from the contacts. Ensure the surface is dry before proceeding.

Solder the new microphone
5 minPosition the replacement microphone over the board pads using fine-tip tweezers. Solder each pin carefully with a fine-tip soldering iron.

Reinstall the motherboard
3 minAlign the motherboard with the front housing clips. Carefully lower it into place, making sure no flex cables get trapped underneath.

Reconnect display and battery cables
3 minInsert the display flex cable into its socket and close the retention latch. Press the battery connector firmly down onto its board socket.

Secure the midframe and shell
4 minSnap the midframe onto the body and reinstall the 14 Torx T3 screws. Reinsert your SIM/SD cards and press the outer shell back onto the phone.
