Step-by-step

Power off the Pixel 9
1 minCompletely turn off your device and ensure the battery is discharged below 25%. This minimizes thermal hazard if the battery is accidentally damaged during repair.

Heat the back glass edge
2 minApply heat around the perimeter of the back cover for two minutes using a heat gun or hair dryer. Softening the perimeter adhesive makes glass separation easier.

Attach suction handle
2 minPlace a suction cup near the bottom edge of the back glass. Pull up firmly on the ring to create a small gap between the glass and the frame.

Insert opening pick
2 minSlide a thin plastic opening pick into the gap created by the suction cup. Keep the pick shallow to avoid damaging internal flex cables.

Slice bottom adhesive
2 minGlide the pick along the bottom edge of the device to slice through the adhesive layer. Leave the pick in place to prevent the glass from re-sealing.

Slice side adhesive
3 minMove a second pick up along the left and right edges of the phone. Insert the pick no deeper than 4 mm to avoid striking internal components.

Slice top edge adhesive
2 minCarefully slice through the top edge adhesive with an opening pick. Take extra care near the camera visor section.

Open the back cover
2 minGently swing the back glass open toward the side like a book cover. Do not pull it away completely, as a sensor ribbon cable remains attached.

Unscrew cable bracket screws
3 minUse a Torx T3 screwdriver to remove the screws holding the lower metal shield bracket in place. Store screws in a magnetic mat or organizer tray.

Remove cover bracket
1 minGrasp the metal bracket with tweezers and lift it off the motherboard. Set the bracket aside safely.

Disconnect back cover cable
2 minUse the flat end of a spudger to pry the flex connector straight up from its socket. The back glass can now be removed from the frame.

Unscrew midframe shield
4 minRemove the Torx T3 screws securing the central graphite sheet and midframe protective plate.

Remove midframe plate
2 minPeel back the heat-dissipating graphite sheet and lift the midframe cover out of the chassis. Expose the motherboard and battery compartment.

Disconnect battery cable
1 minInsert a plastic spudger under the battery connector lip and lift straight up. Disconnecting power prevents short circuits during battery removal.

Apply adhesive remover
3 minApply several drops of high-purity isopropyl alcohol around the edges of the battery. Allow two minutes for the liquid to soften the underlying adhesive.

Peel battery pull tab
3 minLocate the adhesive pull tab at the edge of the battery well and peel its end loose. Pull the tab steadily at a flat angle across the battery base.

Pry out old battery
3 minInsert a plastic opening tool underneath the battery edge away from the motherboard board. Gently lift the battery out of the chassis well.

Clean battery well
2 minWipe down the bottom of the battery compartment with an isopropyl alcohol wipe. Remove all residual adhesive strips and debris before installing the new battery.

Install new battery adhesive
2 minPeel the protective backing off new pre-cut battery adhesive strips and press them into the battery compartment.

Set replacement battery
2 minPosition the new battery into the compartment, aligning it carefully. Press down firmly across its surface to secure it to the adhesive.

Reconnect battery connector
1 minAlign the battery press connector over its socket on the motherboard and press down until it snaps into place.

Reinstall midframe shield
3 minReposition the midframe shield and graphite layer over the internal components. Drive the Torx T3 screws back in until snug.

Reconnect back cover flex
2 minConnect the back cover sensor cable to the board and reinstall its metal bracket using the saved screws.

Apply back glass adhesive
4 minApply a replacement pre-cut adhesive gasket to the phone frame, then press the back glass firmly down to seal the device.

Power the Pixel 9 back on and test the battery replacement function before you put every screw away. Check touch/display response, charging, cameras, buttons, and wireless as relevant to this repair.
