Step-by-step

Power off the phone
1 minPress and hold the power button, then tap Power Off on the screen. Ensure the device is completely powered down before starting.

Heat the display perimeter
3 minApply a heated iOpener or heat gun to the edges of the display for two minutes. This softens the adhesive securing the screen glass to the frame.

Attach a suction cup
1 minPlace a suction cup onto the bottom center of the display assembly. Press down firmly to establish a strong seal.

Insert an opening pick
2 minPull up on the suction cup to create a small gap between the glass screen and the frame. Insert the tip of an opening pick into the gap.

Slice perimeter adhesive
3 minSlide the opening pick along the bottom and side edges of the display to cut through the screen adhesive. Do not insert the pick deeper than 3 mm.

Open the display assembly
2 minGently lift the bottom edge of the display and pivot it upward like a book hood. Lay it face-down above the top edge without straining the ribbon cable.

Unscrew display cable bracket
2 minUse a T5 Torx screwdriver to remove the two screws securing the metal display cable bracket.

Remove display cable bracket
1 minUse tweezers to lift and remove the metal bracket covering the display flex connector.

Disconnect the display cable
1 minPry the display flex cable connector straight up from its socket on the motherboard using a spudger. Set the display assembly aside.

Remove midframe screws
3 minUse a T5 Torx screwdriver to remove the screws holding the lower midframe housing and speaker assembly to the chassis.

Pry out speaker module
2 minInsert the flat end of a spudger under the edge of the lower speaker assembly. Pry gently to release it from the frame adhesive.

Install replacement speaker module
2 minPlace the new speaker module into the bottom cavity of the phone frame. Press down gently until it clicks firmly into position.

Secure the midframe screws
3 minReinsert and tighten the T5 Torx screws securing the speaker housing and midframe to the phone chassis.

Reconnect display flex cable
1 minAlign the display flex cable connector directly over its socket and press down firmly until it snaps into place.

Reinstall display cable bracket
2 minPlace the metal display bracket over the connector and tighten the two T5 Torx screws to secure it.

Apply display adhesive and seal
4 minClean old glue with 99% isopropyl alcohol, apply a fresh pre-cut adhesive strip, then press the display firmly onto the frame.

Power the Pixel 4a back on and test the speaker repair function before you put every screw away. Check touch/display response, charging, cameras, buttons, and wireless as relevant to this repair.
