Step-by-step

Power off the phone
1 minPress and hold the power button, then select Power Off on the screen to prevent electrical shorts.

Heat the display edges
2 minApply heat around the front glass perimeter using a heat gun on low power for 2 minutes to soften the adhesive.

Attach a suction cup
2 minPress a suction cup onto the top half of the screen and pull upward firmly to create a small gap.

Insert an opening pick
2 minInsert a thin plastic opening pick into the gap between the glass screen and the plastic phone bezel.

Slice the display adhesive
3 minSlide the pick along all four outer edges of the screen to cut through the perimeter adhesive gasket.

Open the display panel
2 minGently swing the top edge of the display open like a book, taking care not to strain the ribbon cable at the bottom.

Remove the display connector bracket
2 minUse a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the metal display cable shield, then lift the shield out.

Disconnect the display cable
1 minPry the display connector straight up off the motherboard using the flat end of a spudger.

Unscrew the midframe
4 minRemove the T3 Torx screws securing the internal plastic midframe around the edges of the phone frame.

Remove the midframe
3 minInsert a plastic prying tool under the midframe tabs and lift the frame completely out of the rear housing.

Disconnect the volume flex cable
2 minUse the pointed end of a spudger to disconnect the volume button ribbon cable press-fit connector from the motherboard.

Pry up the volume flex cable
3 minApply a drop of isopropyl alcohol behind the cable and gently slide a spudger beneath it to release the factory adhesive.

Remove the volume buttons
2 minUse precision tweezers to press inward on the metal retention tabs and remove the volume button covers from the frame.

Install the new volume flex cable
2 minAlign the replacement volume flex cable against the internal housing slot and press firmly to adhere it in place.

Reconnect the volume flex cable
1 minAlign the flex cable press connector over its motherboard socket and press down firmly until it snaps into position.
