Step-by-step
- 1
Power off the Pixel 3
1 minPress and hold the power button until the menu appears, then tap Power Off. Ensure the device is fully shut down before proceeding.

Heat the rear glass edges
2 minApply a hot iOpener or heat gun around the outer edges of the rear glass for 2 minutes. This softens the strong waterproof adhesive securing the back cover.

Attach a suction cup
1 minPlace a suction cup onto the bottom half of the rear glass, near the USB-C port. Press down firmly to create a secure seal.

Insert an opening pick
2 minPull up on the suction cup to create a small gap at the bottom edge. Insert an opening pick no more than 3mm into the gap.

Slice the bottom adhesive
2 minSlide the pick back and forth along the bottom edge of the glass. Keep the pick shallow to avoid damaging internal flex cables.

Slice the left side adhesive
2 minGuide the pick around the bottom-left corner and slide up toward the volume buttons. Carefully slice through the adhesive layer.

Slice the right side adhesive
2 minInsert a pick along the bottom-right corner and slide it up toward the top right edge. Take care not to insert the pick too deeply near the camera.

Slice the top edge adhesive
2 minSlide your opening pick across the top edge between the back glass and outer frame. Ensure all four sides are fully separated.

Lift the rear glass carefully
1 minGently lift the left side of the back glass like a book cover. Do not pull it away completely because the fingerprint sensor flex cable is still attached.

Unscrew the fingerprint bracket
2 minUse a Torx T3 screwdriver to remove the single screw holding the fingerprint sensor bracket in place. Place the screw in a safe organizer tray.

Remove the fingerprint shield
1 minUse tweezers to lift and remove the small metal shield covering the fingerprint sensor press connector.

Disconnect the fingerprint flex cable
1 minPry up the fingerprint sensor press connector straight from its motherboard socket using a plastic spudger.

Remove the rear glass completely
1 minSet the back glass assembly aside in a safe, dust-free area for reassembly later.

Unscrew the top motherboard bracket
3 minRemove the nine Torx T3 screws securing the plastic top assembly and NFC antenna to the phone body.

Pry up the upper shield and NFC coil
2 minInsert a spudger under the top right edge of the NFC coil assembly. Pry upward gently to release the clips and remove the bracket.

Disconnect the battery cable
1 minLocate the battery connector on the motherboard and use a plastic spudger to pop it straight up from its socket.

Apply isopropyl alcohol around battery
2 minApply a few drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol along the top and bottom edges of the battery. Wait 2 minutes for the adhesive to dissolve.

Insert a spudger under the battery
2 minSlide a flat plastic opening card or wide spudger beneath the left side of the battery. Never use sharp metal tools against the battery casing.

Pry out the old battery
3 minGently lever the battery upward until the softened adhesive completely releases from the chassis. Lift the battery out of the phone.

Clean adhesive residue from chassis
2 minWipe away any leftover adhesive or alcohol residue inside the battery well using a lint-free cloth.

Apply new battery adhesive tape
2 minPeel the protective backing off the new adhesive strips and attach them firmly into the battery recessed area.

Set the new battery in place
2 minAlign the replacement battery over the adhesive strips, making sure the flex connector reaches the socket without strain, then press down.

Reconnect the battery cable
1 minPress the battery connector directly down into its socket on the motherboard until it snaps into place.

Position the upper shield assembly
2 minAlign the NFC coil and top bracket over the motherboard, pressing down around the edges until it sits flush.

Secure the upper shield screws
3 minReinstall the nine Torx T3 screws to secure the top shield and antenna to the device frame.

Reconnect the fingerprint sensor flex
1 minHold the rear glass near the frame and snap the fingerprint cable press connector back into its motherboard socket.

Secure the fingerprint connector bracket
2 minPlace the small metal bracket over the fingerprint connector and reinstall the single Torx T3 screw.

Press the rear glass firmly to seal
2 minApply pre-cut replacement rear glass adhesive, align the back cover carefully, and press around all edges to secure the seal.
After your Google Pixel 3 battery replacement
Power the Pixel 3 back on and test the battery replacement function before you put every screw away. Check touch/display response, charging, cameras, buttons, and wireless as relevant to this repair. If something fails after closing the device, reopen carefully and reseat the connectors for this Google Pixel 3 job before assuming the part is defective. Keep leftover adhesive and screws labeled in case you need a second pass.
