Step-by-step

Power off the Google Pixel 2 XL
1 minPress and hold the power button, then tap Power Off on the screen. Ensure the device is completely powered down before proceeding.

Heat the front display perimeter
3 minApply a heat gun or hair dryer to the edges of the display for two minutes to soften the adhesive. Keep the heat source moving constantly to avoid localized heat damage.

Attach a suction cup to the screen
1 minPlace a suction cup onto the lower portion of the front glass, just above the speaker grill. Press down firmly to create a tight seal.

Slice through perimeter adhesive
5 minPull up gently on the suction cup to create a small gap between the glass and metal frame. Insert a plastic prying pick into the gap and slide it along the edges to cut the adhesive.

Pivot the display open
2 minGently lift the top edge of the display screen upwards like a book page. Do not pull it completely away, as fragile flex cables are still connected near the bottom.

Remove display bracket screws
2 minUse a Phillips #000 screwdriver to remove the two screws securing the metal display ribbon bracket. Set the screws aside in a safe location.

Remove the display bracket
1 minUse tweezers to lift the small metal cover bracket off the display connector on the motherboard.

Disconnect the display flex cable
1 minPry the display flex connector straight up from its motherboard socket using the flat end of a spudger. Set the detached display assembly aside.

Remove midframe screws
4 minUnscrew the 10 Phillips screws securing the internal midframe to the phone body. Keep track of each screw position for reassembly.

Lift and remove the midframe
2 minInsert a plastic prying tool under the midframe edge and gently pop it out of the rear aluminum casing.

Disconnect the battery cable
1 minUse a spudger to pry the battery press connector straight up off the main logic board to eliminate electrical risks.

Disconnect lower antenna coaxial cable
2 minUse tweezers to carefully snap the lower antenna coax cable off its terminal on the bottom daughterboard assembly.

Disconnect daughterboard main flex cable
1 minPry up the lower ribbon cable connector that links the charging port daughterboard to the main system board.

Remove daughterboard retaining screws
2 minRemove the Phillips screws holding the charging port sub-board to the bottom of the housing.

Pry out old charging port assembly
2 minInsert a plastic spudger beneath the USB-C port daughterboard and pry it up from the light adhesive holding it down.

Clean residual display and frame adhesive
3 minApply a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to a cloth and wipe away old adhesive remnants along the phone frame edges.

Position the new USB-C daughterboard
2 minAlign the replacement charging port board into the bottom housing slot and press down lightly to seat it.

Fasten daughterboard screws
2 minDrive the Phillips retaining screws back into the daughterboard to firmly secure the USB-C port.

Reconnect lower flex cable and antenna
2 minSnap the main ribbon cable and antenna coaxial cable back onto their corresponding connectors on the new daughterboard.

Reconnect the battery cable
1 minAlign the battery flex connector over its socket and press firmly until it clicks into place.

Reinstall the internal midframe
2 minPlace the midframe back into the rear chassis and press around the perimeter until it snaps flush.

Secure midframe screws
3 minReinsert and tighten all 10 Phillips screws into the midframe.

Reconnect display ribbon cable
2 minPosition the screen near the chassis and press the display cable connector onto its motherboard socket.

Reinstall display cable bracket
2 minPlace the metal display bracket over the connector and tighten the two Phillips screws to lock it down.

Apply new display adhesive strips
3 minPeel the backing from the custom pre-cut display adhesive and apply it carefully along the internal rim of the chassis.

Seal display to chassis
2 minAlign the display screen accurately over the frame and press firmly along all four edges to bond the new adhesive.
