Safety
- Disconnect the battery immediately after opening to prevent electrical short circuits.

Step-by-step

Power Down Device
1 minTurn off your iPhone XR completely before starting any disassembly. Press and hold the side button with either volume button, then slide to power off.

Remove Bottom Pentalobe Screws
2 minUnscrew the two 3.5 mm P2 Pentalobe screws located on the bottom edge near the Lightning connector.

Heat Lower Edge
2 minApply heat to the lower edge of the phone using a heat gun or hair dryer for 1 to 2 minutes to soften the display adhesive.

Attach Suction Cup
1 minPress a suction cup onto the bottom half of the front glass panel, just above the bottom bezel.

Create Initial Gap
2 minPull up on the suction cup to create a small gap between the display panel and the frame, then insert an opening pick into the seam.

Slice Edge Adhesive
3 minSlide the opening pick around the bottom and left edges of the screen to cut through the adhesive. Avoid inserting the pick too deeply on the right side near the ribbon cables.

Open Display Assembly
1 minSwing the display open from the left side like a book cover. Prop it up against a box or wall to avoid straining the display cables.

Unscrew Lower Connector Bracket
2 minRemove the three Y000 tri-point screws holding the lower metal connector bracket in place.

Remove Lower Connector Bracket
1 minUse tweezers to lift the lower metal bracket off the logic board and set it aside.

Disconnect Battery Cable
1 minUse the flat end of a spudger to gently lever the battery connector straight up out of its socket.

Disconnect Display Connectors
2 minPry up the display panel cable connector and the touch digitizer cable connector from the logic board using a spudger.

Unscrew Top Sensor Bracket
2 minRemove the five screws securing the upper earpiece speaker and sensor assembly bracket.

Disconnect Sensor Cable
1 minDisconnect the top earpiece speaker and front sensor assembly cable from its socket on the logic board.

Separate Screen Assembly
1 minLift the display assembly away from the rear enclosure completely and place it on a clean work surface.

Unscrew Earpiece Speaker
2 minRemove the four screws holding the earpiece speaker and sensor assembly to the back of the display.

Detach Sensor Assembly
3 minCarefully pry the ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, and microphone array off the front glass notch using a spudger.

Transfer Assembly to New Screen
3 minAlign and seat the earpiece speaker and sensor module into the plastic bracket cutouts on the new screen.

Secure Earpiece Assembly
2 minReinstall the four screws securing the earpiece speaker and sensor module to the new screen assembly.

Apply Display Seal Adhesive
3 minPeel the backing off the replacement perimeter adhesive gasket and press it onto the cleaned edges of the phone frame.

Reconnect Sensor Cable
1 minPlug the upper sensor assembly cable connector into its matching socket on the logic board.

Reconnect Display Cables
2 minAlign and press down the display and digitizer cable connectors until they snap firmly into place.

Reconnect Battery Cable
1 minPress the battery connector back down into its socket on the logic board.

Reinstall Connector Brackets
3 minPlace both upper and lower metal brackets over their connectors and drive in all original screws.

Seal Display Panel
2 minHook the top edge of the display panel into the frame, then lower it flat and press along the edges until it snaps tight.

Reinstall Pentalobe Screws
2 minDrive the two 3.5 mm P2 Pentalobe screws back into the bottom of the frame next to the Lightning port.
After your Apple iPhone XR screen replacement
Power the iPhone XR back on and test the screen replacement function before you put every screw away. Check touch/display response, charging, cameras, buttons, and wireless as relevant to this repair.
