Step-by-step

Power off the device
1 minPress and hold the side button and volume down button until the power slider appears. Slide to power off completely.

Remove bottom Pentalobe screws
2 minUse a P2 Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the two 3.5 mm screws on either side of the Lightning port.

Heat lower edge of display
2 minApply a heated iOpener or hair dryer to the bottom edge of the phone for 90 seconds to soften the adhesive.

Attach suction cup
1 minPlace a suction cup on the lower half of the display panel, just above the home button.

Create initial opening gap
2 minPull up firmly on the suction cup while pressing down on the frame to create a small gap at the bottom edge.

Insert plastic opening pick
1 minSlide an opening pick into the gap between the glass display and the outer aluminum bezel.

Slice bottom edge adhesive
2 minSlide the pick around the bottom left corner to cut through the perimeter display seal.

Slice side perimeter adhesive
3 minMove the pick up the left edge and along the right edge to free the display, avoiding top tabs.

Open display like a book
1 minGently lift the home button edge up and swing the display open to the right side, resting it against a prop.

Unscrew lower display bracket
3 minRemove the four Phillips screws securing the lower display cable bracket to the logic board.

Remove lower cable bracket
1 minUse tweezers to lift the metal shield bracket off the logic board connectors.

Disconnect battery press connector
1 minPry the battery connector straight up from its socket on the logic board using a plastic spudger.

Disconnect lower display cables
2 minUse the edge of a spudger to pry the lower display cable and touch cable connectors off the logic board.

Unscrew upper sensor bracket
2 minRemove the three Phillips screws holding the front panel sensor assembly bracket at the top.

Disconnect front camera sensor cable
1 minDisconnect the front camera and sensor assembly cable connector from the top of the logic board.

Separate display assembly from frame
1 minLift the display assembly free from the enclosure and set the body aside.

Unscrew home button bracket
3 minRemove the four Y000 tri-point screws holding the home button metal bracket to the display.

Transfer home button to new screen
5 minCarefully detach the home button ribbon cable, lift the Touch ID sensor out, and install it into the replacement display.

Reassemble display and enclosure
10 minConnect the display cables, reinstall metal brackets, clear old frame adhesive, apply new seal, and snap screen closed.
