Step-by-step

Power off the iPhone
1 minPress and hold the power button until the slide to power off slider appears. Slide to completely shut down the device before opening.

Remove the pentalobe screws
2 minUse a P2 Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the two 3.4 mm screws located on either side of the Lightning port.

Attach the suction cup
1 minPlace a suction cup onto the lower left corner of the screen, taking care not to place it over the home button.

Pry open the lower edge
3 minPull up gently on the suction cup while inserting a plastic opening pick between the display assembly and the outer frame.

Slice the perimeter adhesive
3 minSlide the plastic pick along the left and right edges to cut through the display adhesive tape.

Open the display assembly
2 minGently swing the home button end of the screen upward to a 90-degree angle. Lean it against a solid object to avoid straining top cables.

Unscrew the battery bracket
2 minRemove the two Phillips #000 screws holding the metal battery connector cover to the logic board.

Remove the battery bracket
1 minUse tweezers to lift out the metal battery cover and set it aside.

Disconnect the battery
1 minPry the battery connector straight up from its socket on the logic board using the flat end of a spudger.

Unscrew the Taptic Engine
2 minRemove the three Phillips screws securing the Taptic Engine assembly to the rear enclosure.

Remove the Taptic Engine
1 minGently lift the old Taptic Engine up and out of the lower chassis using tweezers.

Position the new Taptic Engine
2 minLower the replacement Taptic Engine into the chassis, aligning its screw holes with the standoffs.

Fasten the Taptic Engine screws
2 minReinstall and tighten the three Phillips screws to hold the new Taptic Engine firmly in place.

Reconnect the battery
1 minAlign the battery ribbon connector over its socket and press down firmly until you feel it click into place.

Reinstall the battery bracket
2 minPlace the metal battery bracket over the connector and secure it with its two Phillips screws.

Close the display assembly
2 minAlign the top hooks of the display with the frame and press down firmly along the edges until the screen snaps closed.

Reinstall the pentalobe screws
2 minInsert and tighten the two P2 Pentalobe screws at the bottom of the device near the charging port.
