Safety
- Ensure the iPhone 4S is powered off before beginning disassembly.

- Do not bend or puncture the battery during connector removal.

Step-by-step

Remove Pentalobe Screws
2 minRemove the two 3.6 mm Pentalobe screws located on either side of the dock connector port at the bottom of the device.

Slide Off Rear Cover
2 minPush the rear glass panel upward toward the top of the phone until it shifts about 2 mm, then lift it clear of the frame.

Unscrew Battery Connector
3 minRemove the two Phillips #000 screws securing the battery connector and the pressure contact clip to the logic board.

Disconnect the Battery
2 minInsert the flat edge of a spudger underneath the battery connector and pry it straight up off the board.

Remove Upper Logic Board Shield
4 minRemove the four Phillips screws securing the EMI shield at the top of the logic board, then lift the shield out.

Disconnect Rear Camera
3 minUse a spudger to gently pop the rear camera press-fit connector off the board and lift the camera out.

Unplug Upper Connectors
5 minDisconnect the audio jack/volume flex, digitizer, display, and power/sensor flex cables from the upper portion of the logic board.

Disconnect Lower Dock Cable
3 minPry up the dock connector flex cable and detach the tiny coaxial cellular antenna cable from the bottom of the board.

Unfasten Logic Board Screws
4 minRemove the remaining logic board screws, including the standoff screw near the camera well.

Remove the Logic Board
3 minCarefully pivot the bottom of the logic board up and pull it away from the top edge of the frame.

Unscrew Volume Button Brackets
4 minRemove the small Phillips screws securing the volume and silent switch retaining metal brackets to the side frame.

Remove Damaged Volume Flex Cable
4 minUse fine-tipped tweezers and a spudger to gently peel the volume button flex assembly off the inside frame.

Install New Volume Button Flex Cable
5 minAlign the replacement volume button flex cable and press its switches firmly into the side frame cutouts.

Reattach Button Brackets
4 minReinstall the metal retaining brackets over the volume and mute switches and tighten the securing screws.
