Step-by-step

Turn off the iPhone
1 minPress and hold the top power button until the slider appears on screen. Slide the knob right to power off the device completely.

Remove the bottom pentalobe screws
2 minUse a P2 Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the two 3.6 mm screws located on either side of the 30-pin dock connector.

Slide off the rear panel
1 minPush the rear glass panel upward toward the top edge of the phone until it slides open about 2 mm. Lift the panel away from the inner frame and set it aside.

Unscrew the battery connector bracket
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the two screws securing the battery connector bracket to the logic board. Note that the top screw is slightly shorter.

Disconnect the battery cable
1 minInsert the edge of a plastic spudger beneath the battery connector and gently pry it straight up from the socket. Be careful not to lose the tiny contact clip located under the connector.

Remove the battery
2 minPull the clear plastic pull-tab gently to lift the battery out of the case. If stuck, use a spudger on the right side of the battery to pry it away from the adhesive.

Unscrew the dock cable cover
2 minRemove the two Phillips #00 screws holding the metal dock connector cable bracket in place.

Disconnect the dock ribbon cable
1 minUse the flat end of a spudger to pry the dock connector ribbon cable straight up off its logic board socket.

Peel back the dock ribbon cable
1 minGently peel the flexible dock connector ribbon cable back from the speaker enclosure housing.

Unscrew the speaker enclosure
2 minRemove the two Phillips #00 screws holding the speaker housing to the lower inner frame.

Lift out the old speaker assembly
1 minUse tweezers or a spudger to carefully lift the speaker enclosure out from the bottom of the phone case.

Insert the replacement speaker assembly
2 minLower the new speaker module into the bottom of the outer casing, aligning its screw holes with the frame mounts.

Secure the speaker screws
2 minThread and tighten the two Phillips #00 screws to hold the new speaker assembly firmly in place.

Reconnect the dock connector cable
3 minAdhere the ribbon cable across the speaker housing, press the connector firmly onto the logic board socket, and replace the metal cover bracket.

Reinstall the battery
3 minPosition the battery back in the housing, snap the connector onto the logic board along with its contact clip, and reattach the bracket screws.

Reattach the rear panel
2 minPlace the rear panel onto the phone frame slightly offset, slide it down until flush, and tighten the two bottom pentalobe screws.
