Step-by-step

Power Off the iPhone
1 minPress and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top edge until the slider appears. Slide to power down the device completely.

Remove the Bottom Case Screws
2 minUse a Pentalobe P2 or Phillips #000 screwdriver to remove the two 3.6 mm screws adjacent to the 30-pin dock connector.

Slide Off the Rear Panel
1 minPush the rear glass panel upward about 2 mm toward the top edge. Lift the rear panel away from the frame.

Unscrew the Battery Connector
2 minRemove the single 2.5 mm Phillips screw securing the battery connector bracket to the logic board.

Disconnect the Battery Cable
2 minUse a plastic spudger to pry the battery connector straight up from the logic board, taking care not to pry off the board socket.

Remove the Battery
2 minPull the clear plastic tab upward to loosen the adhesive beneath the battery. Lift the battery out of the case.

Unscrew the Dock Cable Shield
2 minRemove the two Phillips screws securing the metal dock connector cable cover to the logic board.

Disconnect the Dock Connector Cable
1 minPry the wide dock connector ribbon cable straight up from the logic board using a spudger.

Disconnect the Antenna Connector
2 minUse tweezers or a spudger to pop the lower antenna coaxial cable off its terminal on the dock connector board.

Unscrew the Loudspeaker Module
2 minRemove the two Phillips screws securing the loudspeaker assembly and microphone housing to the lower case.

Remove the Loudspeaker Assembly
2 minLift the loudspeaker enclosure up and out of the phone to reveal the microphone sitting in the bottom frame.

Unseat the Primary Microphone
2 minUse precision tweezers to gently lift the microphone capsule and its black rubber gasket out of its recessed port.

Peel Up the Assembly Cable
3 minPeel the flexible dock connector and microphone ribbon cable off the bottom inner case using a plastic opening tool.

Install the New Microphone Assembly
3 minAlign the replacement dock connector and microphone assembly, pressing the microphone with its rubber boot into the lower acoustic port.

Reassemble the Components
5 minReinstall the speaker assembly, reconnect the ribbon and antenna cables, secure the battery, and slide the back cover into place.
