Step-by-step

Power off the device
1 minPress and hold the side button and either volume button, then slide the screen toggle to power down the iPhone completely.

Remove bottom pentalobe screws
2 minUse a P2 pentalobe screwdriver to unscrew the two 3.8 mm screws located on either side of the USB-C port.

Heat the lower display edge
2 minApply a heated iOpener or heat gun to the bottom edge of the display for two minutes to soften the perimeter adhesive.

Attach a suction cup
1 minPress a suction cup firmly onto the lower portion of the front glass screen, just above the bottom bezel.

Insert an opening pick
2 minPull up on the suction cup to create a slight gap, then slide a thin opening pick under the screen bezel.

Slice perimeter display adhesive
4 minCarefully slide the opening pick along the bottom and sides of the phone to cut through the display waterproof sealant.

Open the display like a book
1 minSwing the screen open gently from the right edge to avoid straining the delicate display flex cables attached to the logic board.

Remove the lower logic board shield
3 minUnscrew the Y000 tri-point screws holding the lower metal shield plate and lift it off with tweezers.

Disconnect the battery
1 minUse the flat end of a spudger to gently pop the battery press-connector off its logic board socket.

Disconnect display ribbon cables
2 minPry the display cable and ambient sensor assembly connectors straight up from the logic board using your spudger.

Separate the display assembly
1 minLift the display assembly free from the phone chassis and set it aside in a safe location.

Unscrew the upper TrueDepth shield
3 minRemove the Y000 screws securing the protective grounding bracket over the top camera and sensor array.

Remove the upper shield bracket
1 minLift out the metal bracket with fine tweezers to expose the Face ID module connectors.

Disconnect Face ID sensor connectors
2 minPry the infrared camera and dot projector press-fit connectors off the logic board using a spudger.

Remove the damaged Face ID module
2 minGently lever the TrueDepth camera and sensor module out of its recessed notch in the upper chassis.

Seat the new Face ID module
2 minPosition the replacement TrueDepth camera assembly into the housing notch and press lightly to seat it.

Connect Face ID sensor cables
2 minAlign and press down on the TrueDepth module connectors until they click firmly onto the logic board.

Reinstall the upper shield bracket
2 minPlace the metal shield back over the TrueDepth module and tighten the securing Y000 screws.
