Step-by-step

Power off the iPhone
1 minTurn off your iPhone completely before beginning any disassembly to prevent electrical shorts.

Remove the lower pentalobe screws
2 minUse a P2 Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the two 6.8 mm screws located on either side of the USB-C port.

Heat the lower edge of the display
3 minApply a warm heat gun or hair dryer to the bottom edge of the phone for two minutes to soften the display adhesive.

Attach a suction cup near the bottom edge
1 minPlace a suction cup on the lower half of the front glass, just above the USB-C port, and press firmly to secure it.

Prying open a slight gap
2 minPull up on the suction cup with firm, constant pressure to create a small gap between the screen and the enclosure.

Insert an opening pick
2 minInsert a thin plastic opening pick into the gap created at the bottom edge of the phone.

Slice the perimeter adhesive
4 minSlide the pick around the bottom edge and up both sides to slice through the waterproof adhesive seal.

Swing open the display screen
2 minGently lift the right edge of the screen to open the phone like a book, taking care not to strain the ribbon cables on the left.

Remove the battery cover screws
2 minUse a Tri-point Y000 screwdriver to remove the screws holding the lower metal shield over the battery connector.

Disconnect the battery cable
1 minUse the flat end of a plastic spudger to pry the battery connector straight up from its motherboard socket.

Disconnect the display connector
2 minPry up the display cable connector using a spudger to completely free the display assembly from the rear case.

Remove the Taptic Engine bracket screws
2 minUnscrew the Tri-point Y000 screws holding the metal retaining bracket over the Taptic Engine.

Lift out the metal bracket
1 minUse tweezers to carefully pick up and remove the metal cover bracket exposing the Taptic Engine assembly.

Disconnect the Taptic Engine ribbon cable
1 minPry the Taptic Engine connector straight up from the mainboard using the tip of your spudger.

Remove the Taptic Engine
2 minLift the Taptic Engine module out of the lower chassis with tweezers and set it aside.
