Step-by-step

Power off device
1 minPress and hold the side button and either volume button, then slide to turn off the iPhone completely.

Remove bottom screws
2 minUse a Pentalobe P2 driver to remove the two 3.8 mm screws on either side of the USB-C port.

Heat rear glass edge
2 minApply a heat gun or hair dryer to the lower edge of the back glass for two minutes to soften the adhesive.

Attach suction cup
1 minPress a suction cup onto the lower third of the rear glass, just above the USB-C port.

Insert opening pick
2 minPull up firmly on the suction cup to create a small gap, then insert an opening pick into the seam.

Slice rear adhesive
3 minSlide the pick around the perimeter of the back glass to slice through the perimeter adhesive seal.

Open rear glass panel
1 minGently swing the back glass open to the right side like the cover of a book.

Unscrew lower bracket
2 minUse a Tri-point Y000 driver to remove the screws holding the lower metal shield over the connectors.

Disconnect battery cable
1 minUse the pointed end of a spudger to pry the battery connector straight up from its motherboard socket.

Detach back glass cable
1 minDisconnect the rear glass flex cable using a spudger and set the back glass panel aside completely.

Unscrew lower speaker
2 minRemove the Tri-point Y000 and Phillips screws securing the speaker assembly at the bottom of the frame.

Remove speaker assembly
1 minLift the bottom speaker housing up and out of the phone using tweezers.

Disconnect Taptic Engine
1 minPry the Taptic Engine ribbon cable connector straight up off the logic board using a spudger.

Unscrew Taptic Engine
2 minUse a Tri-point Y000 screwdriver to remove the mounting screws securing the Taptic Engine to the frame.

Extract Taptic Engine
1 minGently lift the faulty Taptic Engine out of the lower enclosure using precision tweezers.

Install new Taptic Engine
3 minAlign the replacement Taptic Engine in the frame, reconnect its cable, and tighten the retaining screws.
