Step-by-step

Power off the device
1 minPress and hold the side button and either volume button, then slide to turn off the iPhone completely.

Remove the Pentalobe screws
2 minUse a P2 Pentalobe driver to remove the two 1.5 mm screws located on the bottom edge near the USB-C port.

Heat the rear glass cover
2 minApply a heat gun or hair dryer around the perimeter of the back glass for two minutes to soften the factory adhesive.

Apply a suction cup
1 minPress a suction cup onto the lower third of the back glass, keeping clear of the camera housing.

Slice the perimeter adhesive
4 minPull up on the suction handle to create a small gap, then slide an opening pick around the edge to slice the seal.

Swing open the back glass
2 minCarefully open the back panel to the right side like a book fold, taking care not to stretch the internal ribbon cable.

Unbolt the back glass connector bracket
2 minUse a Y000 tri-point driver to remove the screws securing the metal connector shield over the logic board.

Disconnect the back glass ribbon cable
1 minUse the flat end of a plastic spudger to pop the back glass cable connector straight up from its socket.

Unscrew the lower speaker assembly
3 minRemove the tri-point and Phillips screws securing the bottom loudspeaker module to the frame.

Lift out the loudspeaker
2 minGently pry up and remove the loudspeaker module using a spudger or tweezers to expose the Taptic Engine.

Remove the Taptic Engine screws
2 minUse a Y000 tri-point screwdriver to remove the screws locking the Taptic Engine to the chassis.

Disconnect the Taptic Engine press connector
1 minLever the Taptic Engine ribbon connector straight off its board socket using a plastic spudger.

Remove the faulty Taptic Engine
1 minLift the Taptic Engine unit up and out of the lower enclosure using precision tweezers.

Position the new Taptic Engine
2 minSet the replacement Taptic Engine unit squarely into its recess in the lower chassis.

Fasten the Taptic Engine screws
2 minTighten the tri-point screws to firmly secure the new Taptic Engine module in place.

Attach the Taptic Engine connector
1 minAlign the ribbon connector over its socket and press down firmly until it snaps into position.

Reinstall the loudspeaker
3 minSeat the loudspeaker back into the bottom of the case and reinstall its retaining screws.

Reconnect and reseal the back glass
5 minAttach the back glass cable, replace the metal bracket, apply a new perimeter seal, and reinstall the Pentalobe screws.
