Step-by-step

Pry off lower decorative trim
2 minInsert a plastic spudger into the seam along the bottom edge of the black trim piece on the handle grips. Carefully leverage the spudger to release the plastic clips along both sides.

Remove the decorative trim
1 minGently pull the black trim piece away from the controller body and set it aside.

Pop off L1 and R1 shoulder buttons
2 minInsert an opening pick under the edge of the L1 and R1 buttons. Gently pry upward to release them from their hinge clips.

Remove outer housing screws
3 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the four exposed screws on the front casing.

Unclip rear housing latches
2 minInsert a spudger near the 3.5mm audio jack bottom seam. Gently twist to unlatch the bottom retainers.

Separate rear casing cover
1 minLift the rear shell straight up off the controller assembly to reveal the battery tray.

Disconnect battery connector
2 minGrasp the battery cable plug with precision tweezers and pull straight up from the motherboard socket.

Remove lithium-ion battery
1 minLift the battery out of its retaining frame and set it on a clean, anti-static surface.

Remove battery tray screw
2 minUnscrew the single Phillips #00 screw holding the black plastic battery bracket to the motherboard.

Detach battery holder tray
2 minUnclip the battery bracket from the top edge and lift it clear of the main circuit board.

Disconnect touchpad ribbon cable
2 minUse precision tweezers to pull the touchpad ZIF ribbon cable straight out of its motherboard connector.

Pull off analog joystick caps
1 minGrasp the rubber thumbstick caps firmly and pull them straight up off the potentiometer shafts.

Install replacement thumbstick caps
2 minAlign the replacement thumbstick caps with the D-shaped potentiometer stems and press down firmly.

Reassemble the controller
5 minReconnect the touchpad cable, battery tray, battery, and outer shell components in reverse order.
