Safety
- Unplug the main power cord and wait at least 5 minutes to allow large power supply capacitors to discharge.

- Handle metal shield plates carefully, as stamped steel edges can be sharp.
- Work in a well-ventilated area when using isopropyl alcohol.

Peel Back Warranty Sticker and Rubber Foot
2 minUse tweezers to peel back the warranty label and remove the rubber screw cover on the left side of the console.

Remove Top Plate Security Screw
2 minUnscrew the single T8 Torx security screw hidden beneath the rubber foot cover.

Slide Off Top Logo Plate
2 minSlide the glossy outer top cover toward the left side of the console and lift it off.

Unscrew Upper Main Casing
3 minRemove the seven marked Phillips #1 screws securing the top plastic casing to the frame.

Lift Off Upper Housing
2 minRelease the rear plastic tabs and lift the upper main housing off the console chassis.

Disconnect Blu-ray Drive Cables
3 minUnplug the power connector from the Blu-ray drive and flip up the locking ZIF tab to free the wide ribbon cable.

Remove Blu-ray Disc Drive
2 minLift the disc drive straight up and out of the console assembly.

Unscrew Power Supply Unit
3 minRemove the five Phillips screws holding the power supply unit in place.

Detach and Remove Power Supply
3 minUnplug the AC inlet cable, disconnect the motherboard control cable, and lift the power supply straight up off its motherboard prongs.

Disconnect Control Panel Ribbon Cable
2 minFlip open the retaining flap on the ribbon cable socket and pull the front power switch cable out.

Remove Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Board
3 minRemove the four Phillips screws securing the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module and disconnect the antenna cables.

Unscrew Metal Shielding Frame
4 minRemove all perimeter Phillips screws securing the top metal heat shield to the lower chassis.

Lift Assembly Out of Bottom Case
3 minCarefully lift the enclosed motherboard and fan assembly straight out of the plastic bottom shell.

Remove Heatsink Tension Clamps
3 minUnscrew the four spring-tension screws securing the metal cross-clamps over the Cell/B.E. and RSX processors.

Separate Metal Heat Shields
4 minGently lift the upper shield, then pry the motherboard off the lower shield and heatsink assembly.

Clean Old Thermal Paste
5 minUse high-concentration isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes to clean hardened compound off the processor dies and heatsinks.

Inspect Motherboard Components
5 minExamine the NEC/TOKIN capacitors, surface-mount components, and trace pathways under magnification for cracks or heat damage.

Apply Fresh Thermal Compound
3 minPlace a pea-sized dot of high-performance thermal paste onto the center of both the Cell/B.E. and RSX processor heat spreaders.
