Step-by-step

Unscrew the handle grip base screws
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the two 8.1 mm screws located at the bottom of the handle grips.

Slide off the handle grips
2 minGrasp the rubberized handle grips and pull them straight down and away from the main controller body.

Remove the rear case screws
3 minUnscrew the four Phillips #00 screws securing the back translucent housing shell.

Pry open the rear cover
2 minInsert a plastic spudger into the seam along the bottom edge and gently lift off the rear cover.

Remove the battery
1 minUse your fingers or a nylon spudger to pry the CTR-003 lithium-ion battery out of its bay.

Unscrew the battery tray frame
3 minRemove the five Phillips #00 screws retaining the middle plastic battery frame assembly.

Lift out the battery tray
1 minCarefully lift the battery frame off the circuit board and set it aside.

Disconnect the rumble motor wires
3 minUse precision tweezers to unplug the white JST connectors for both HD Rumble motors from the motherboard.

Unscrew the motherboard
3 minRemove the four Phillips #00 screws securing the main circuit board to the front faceplate.

Separate the motherboard from the front shell
2 minGently lift the motherboard assembly out from the front plastic shell.

Pull off the analog thumbstick caps
1 minFirmly pull the plastic thumbstick caps straight up off the metal shaft potentiometers.

Clean the joystick modules
4 minApply 90%+ isopropyl alcohol to a cotton swab and thoroughly clean dust and debris from the joystick mechanism.

Install replacement thumbsticks
2 minAlign the keyed hole of the new thumbstick caps with the metal posts and press down until seated.

Reassemble the controller housing
6 minLower the motherboard into the front shell, reattach all screws, plug in the rumble motors, and reinstall the battery tray.

Power the Switch Pro back on and test the controller repair function before you put every screw away. Check touch/display response, charging, cameras, buttons, and wireless as relevant to this repair.
