Step-by-step

Power off the console
1 minCompletely turn off the Nintendo Switch OLED and remove any inserted MicroSD card or game cartridge.

Remove the four rear Y00 screws
3 minUse a Y00 tri-point screwdriver to remove the four corner screws on the rear plastic shell.

Remove the top and bottom frame screws
3 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the single screw on the top edge and the two screws on the bottom edge.

Remove the kickstand compartment screws
2 minFlip open the wide kickstand and remove the two exposed Phillips #00 screws inside the cavity.

Lift off the rear plastic cover
2 minInsert a plastic opening pick into the seam along the edge and lift the back cover off the console.

Unscrew the MicroSD card board
2 minRemove the single Phillips #00 screw securing the MicroSD card reader board.

Disconnect the MicroSD card board
2 minUse a spudger to pry the press-fit connector straight up from the motherboard, then set the reader aside.

Remove the metal shield screws
4 minUnscrew the six Phillips #00 screws holding the large aluminum heat shield in place.

Remove the aluminum shield plate
2 minLift the aluminum shield off the frame to expose the motherboard, battery, and cooling assembly.

Disconnect the battery cable
2 minInsert a spudger beneath the battery connector and pry it straight up to cut power to the mainboard immediately.

Remove the heatsink screws
2 minRemove the three Phillips #00 screws holding down the copper heat pipe assembly.

Lift off the copper heatsink
2 minGently lift the copper heatsink up from the motherboard, breaking the seal of the old thermal paste.

Clean liquid residue with isopropyl alcohol
10 minDip a soft-bristle brush in high-concentration isopropyl alcohol and gently scrub away corrosion and mineral deposits from the circuit boards.

Inspect board components under magnification
5 minUse a magnifying glass to inspect motherboard chips, ribbon cable sockets, and capacitors for short circuits or rust.

Allow board to air dry
15 minLet the motherboard sit in a warm, dry area for at least 15 to 30 minutes until all alcohol evaporates completely.

Apply fresh thermal paste
3 minClean the old thermal paste from the main processor using isopropyl alcohol, then apply a small dab of fresh thermal paste before reassembly.
