Step-by-step
- 1
Power off the console completely
1 minPress and hold the power button for three seconds, then select Power Options and choose Turn Off.

Eject the microSD card and game card
1 minOpen the kickstand door and press the microSD card to eject it, then remove any inserted game card from the top slot.

Remove the outer rear Tri-point screws
2 minUse a Y00 Tri-point screwdriver to remove the four corner screws on the rear backplate.

Remove the top and bottom edge screws
2 minUse a PH00 Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws located along the top vent, bottom USB-C port, and side rails.

Lift off the kickstand and rear housing panel
2 minGently lift the plastic rear backplate off the console chassis and set it aside.

Remove the metal shield plate screws
3 minUnscrew the PH00 Phillips screws holding the large aluminum heat shield plate to the inner frame.

Pry up and remove the metal heat shield plate
2 minInsert a spudger under the edge of the metal plate and carefully lift it off the motherboard.

Disconnect the battery flex cable
1 minUse the pointed end of a spudger to lift the battery connector straight up from its motherboard socket.

Remove the Joy-Con rail retaining screws
2 minUnscrew the small Phillips screws securing the target side Joy-Con rail to the console frame.

Unlock the Joy-Con rail ribbon ZIF connector
1 minUse fine tweezers to gently flip up the small black retaining latch on the ribbon cable socket.

Remove the original Joy-Con rail
1 minSlide the ribbon cable out of the socket and lift the damaged rail away from the housing.

Seat the new rail's flex cable into the socket
2 minPosition the replacement rail and slide its ribbon cable straight into the open ZIF socket.

Lock the ZIF socket flap
1 minPress the black locking latch down flat using a spudger to secure the ribbon cable in place.

Secure the new rail with retaining screws
2 minAlign the rail with the side frame and drive the original Phillips screws back into place.

Reconnect the battery flex cable
1 minAlign the battery connector over its motherboard port and press down firmly until it snaps into place.

Reinstall the metal shield plate
2 minLower the metal shield plate onto the console and fasten all original PH00 screws.

Fasten the rear cover and outer screws
3 minSnap the rear plastic shell back onto the chassis and reinstall the Y00 rear screws and PH00 perimeter screws.

Test the new Joy-Con rail connection
2 minAttach a Joy-Con controller to verify that the console recognizes the connection and begins charging.

Power the Switch OLED back on and test the controller repair function before you put every screw away. Check touch/display response, charging, cameras, buttons, and wireless as relevant to this repair.
