Step-by-step

Remove Stylus and Slot Cover
1 minPull the stylus straight out from the right side of the console. Slide out the plastic Game Boy Advance slot cover from the bottom edge.

Unscrew Battery Door
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to loosen the single captive screw on the battery door. Lift the door up and off the housing.

Remove Battery Pack
1 minInsert a plastic spudger into the notch beside the battery. Pry the rechargeable battery out of its compartment.

Remove Housing Screws
4 minRemove the four Tri-Point Y00 screws and three Phillips #00 screws from the lower rear casing.

Separate Lower Enclosure
3 minInsert a plastic pry tool into the seam along the edge of the lower shell. Gently unclip the shell from the main body.

Lift Off Rear Cover
2 minCarefully lift the rear shell straight up from the motherboard assembly, taking care not to dislodge internal loose parts.

Remove Shoulder Buttons
3 minLift the L and R shoulder triggers off their posts. Collect the small metal hinge pins and delicate springs so they do not get lost.

Inspect Game Reader Pins
2 minExamine the pins inside the card slot using a magnifying glass to confirm physical damage or misalignment.

Apply Liquid Flux
2 minApply a liberal drop of rosin core flux across all anchor tabs and rear data pins of the Game Card slot.

Desolder Slot Anchors
5 minHeat the large side mounting tabs with a soldering iron while using desoldering wick to clear the molten solder.

Desolder Data Pins
6 minGently glide a fine soldering tip and desoldering braid along the row of pin connections until all solder is removed.

Remove Old Cartridge Slot
2 minGrasp the metal shell of the card reader with tweezers and lift it off the circuit board once all joints are clear.

Clean Motherboard Pads
3 minClean the PCB pads with a cotton swab soaked in 99% isopropyl alcohol to remove leftover flux and debris.

Position Replacement Slot
3 minAlign the replacement Game Card reader carefully over the motherboard contact pads.

Solder New Cartridge Reader
8 minSolder the side anchor tabs first to lock alignment, then solder each individual data pin using a fine-tip soldering iron.

Reinstall Shoulder Buttons
4 minPosition the tiny springs and pins back into the shoulder triggers and place them onto their mounting posts.

Reattach Rear Shell
3 minAlign the lower rear housing over the motherboard and press down until the plastic clips snap together securely.

Secure Housing Screws
4 minReinstall the four Tri-Point Y00 screws and three Phillips #00 screws to fasten the rear housing.
