Safety

Step-by-step

Remove Stylus and Cartridges
1 minEject any Game Boy Advance or DS cartridges from the slots. Slide the stylus out from the right side of the console.

Unscrew Battery Cover
1 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to loosen the captive screw on the battery compartment door. Lift off the door and set it aside.

Remove Battery Pack
1 minPry the lithium-ion battery out of its compartment using a plastic spudger. Never use metal tools directly against the battery pack.

Remove Outer Housing Screws
3 minUse a Tri-point Y0 screwdriver to remove four casing screws on the back cover. Remove the two Phillips #00 screws near the cartridge slot and power jack.

Pry Open Lower Shell
2 minInsert a spudger into the seam between the upper and lower housing to release the plastic clips. Carefully lift the lower housing straight off.

Remove Shoulder Buttons
2 minLift out the left and right shoulder button plastic triggers along with their metal hinge pins and small springs. Place them in a magnetic tray so they do not spring away.

Unscrew Motherboard
2 minRemove the two Phillips #00 screws securing the motherboard to the front housing. One screw is near the lower-right edge and the other sits near the cartridge reader.

Lift Motherboard Edge
2 minGently lift the bottom edge of the motherboard up like a hinge, taking care not to tear attached ribbon cables. This exposes the button contacts on the back.

Remove Old Conductive Rubber Pads
2 minPeel off the rubber conductive pads covering the D-Pad, A/B/X/Y, and Start/Select buttons using tweezers. Inspect the plastic keycaps underneath for dirt.

Clean Motherboard Contact Pads
2 minDip a cotton swab in 91% isopropyl alcohol and scrub the gold button pads on the motherboard surface. Allow the alcohol to dry completely.

Install Replacement Rubber Pads
2 minAlign the new rubber conductive pads over the plastic buttons and push their alignment pegs into the matching holes on the front housing. Ensure each pad sits flush.

Lower Motherboard Into Position
2 minFold the motherboard back down flat against the front housing, verifying button pads remain flat underneath. Fasten the two Phillips #00 motherboard screws.

Reinstall Shoulder Button Triggers
3 minSlide the metal hinge pins through the shoulder triggers and hook their coil springs into place. Position both assemblies into their slots on the front housing.

Reassemble and Secure Housing
3 minSnap the rear lower housing onto the main body and re-insert the six shell screws. Insert the battery, replace the battery cover, and tighten its screw.
