Safety

Step-by-step

Remove Stylus and SD Card
1 minPull the stylus straight out from its slot on the right side of the console. Press the SD card to pop it out of the left-side slot.

Unscrew Rear Cover
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to loosen the two captive screws along the top edge of the rear cover.

Pry Off Rear Cover
2 minInsert a plastic spudger into the top notch and lift the rear cover away from the console body.

Remove the Battery
1 minLift the battery out from the bottom edge to immediately stop power from reaching damaged circuits.

Remove Lower Housing Screws
4 minUnscrew the ten Phillips #00 screws securing the lower chassis, keeping track of screw lengths.

Lift Lower Housing
2 minGently pivot the lower housing upward from the bottom, being careful not to strain the attached shoulder button cables.

Disconnect Shoulder Button Cables
3 minUse tweezers to carefully lift the left and right shoulder ribbon cable connectors straight off the motherboard.

Remove Circle Pad Assembly
3 minUnscrew the two Phillips #00 screws on the Circle Pad, flip open the ZIF connector latch, and pull the ribbon cable free.

Unplug Wi-Fi Module
3 minPry the Wi-Fi board straight up off the motherboard and pop off the small gold antenna cable connector.

Disconnect Touchscreen Cable
2 minUse a spudger to flip up the dark retaining latch on the touchscreen ZIF connector and slide out the ribbon cable.

Disconnect Motherboard Ribbons
4 minUnlock and disconnect the upper screen display, backlight, microphone, and camera ribbon cables from the top edge.

Unscrew Motherboard
3 minRemove the remaining Phillips #00 screws holding the logic board down to the upper frame.

Lift Out Motherboard
2 minCarefully lift the motherboard out of the console housing without snagging any lingering ribbon cables.

Inspect for Liquid Corrosion
5 minExamine both sides of the motherboard under a magnifying glass for white, green, or black corrosion spots.

Scrub Motherboard with Alcohol
10 minDip a soft brush in 99% isopropyl alcohol and thoroughly scrub all liquid residue and corrosion off the circuit board.

Clean Connectors and Ports
8 minDip cotton swabs in isopropyl alcohol to clean inside all ZIF connectors, charging port pins, and cartridge slots.

Blow Dry Components
3 minUse short bursts of compressed air to flush remaining alcohol out from under surface-mount chips and connectors.

Reassemble and Test
12 minReinstall the motherboard and ribbon cables into the chassis, insert the battery, and test console functionality.
