Step-by-step

Remove the Stylus
1 minSlide the stylus out from its slot on the top edge of the 3DS console.

Loosen Battery Cover Screws
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to loosen the two captive screws on the upper back cover.

Pry Off Battery Cover
2 minInsert a plastic opening tool into the top edge pry slots to detach and remove the outer plate.

Remove Battery Pack
1 minLift the battery out from the lower recess in the compartment using a plastic spudger or fingernail.

Eject SD Card
1 minPush the SD card inward until it clicks, then pull it out from the left side slot.

Remove Lower Housing Screws
4 minUnscrew the nine Phillips #00 screws securing the lower outer shell to the chassis.

Lift Lower Housing
2 minGently lift the bottom edge of the housing, keeping it close to avoid straining the shoulder button cables.

Disconnect Shoulder Button Ribbons
3 minUse fine tweezers to carefully unseat the left and right shoulder button ribbon connectors from the motherboard.

Remove Card Reader Shield Screws
3 minUnscrew the small Phillips screws securing the protective metal shield over the game card slot.

Detach Reader Metal Shield
2 minLift the metal shielding frame away from the motherboard to access the internal card reader pins.

Inspect Card Reader Pins
3 minUse a magnifying glass and light source to check for bent, depressed, or corroded pins inside the slot.

Straighten Bent Pins
5 minCarefully pry any bent gold contact pins back into alignment using fine-tip tweezers.

Clean Reader Contacts
3 minMoisten a foam swab with 99% isopropyl alcohol and gently scrub dirt and residue from the pins.

Reinstall Metal Shield
3 minPosition the metal shield back over the card reader assembly and replace its retaining screws.

Reconnect Shoulder Cables
3 minAlign and press the shoulder button flex cable connectors firmly back onto their motherboard sockets.

Reattach Lower Shell
2 minSet the lower housing back onto the console frame and press along the edges until it snaps flush.

Fasten Shell Screws
4 minReinstall and tighten all nine Phillips #00 screws around the bottom housing.

Reinstall Battery and Cover
2 minInsert the battery, snap the back plate into place, and tighten the two captive screws.
