Step-by-step

Eject Stylus and SD Card
1 minPower off the Nintendo 3DS completely. Pull the stylus and SD card out from their respective slots on the device.

Loosen Battery Plate Screws
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to loosen the four captive screws securing the outer battery cover plate. These screws will remain attached to the cover.

Remove Battery Plate
1 minInsert a plastic opening tool into the pry notches near the top edge of the battery cover. Gently lift and remove the cover.

Extract Battery Pack
1 minUse a plastic spudger or fingernail to lift the battery out from the bottom edge of the compartment.

Remove Lower Housing Screws
3 minRemove the ten Phillips #00 screws securing the lower housing to the main body. Note that two screws are located inside the battery compartment.

Separate Rear Case
2 minGently pry the lower case open starting from the top edge. Do not pull it completely away yet, as delicate shoulder button ribbon cables are attached.

Disconnect Left Shoulder Ribbon
2 minUse tweezers to carefully lift the left shoulder button ribbon cable connector straight up from its motherboard socket.

Disconnect Right Shoulder Ribbon
2 minDisconnect the right shoulder button ribbon cable from the motherboard using plastic tweezers or a spudger.

Remove Rear Housing
1 minLift the rear housing clear off the device and set it aside in a clean work area.

Unscrew Circle Pad Assembly
2 minLocate the Circle Pad joystick module in the upper corner and remove the two Phillips #00 screws holding it in place.

Unlock Circle Pad Connector
1 minUse a spudger to carefully flip up the dark retaining flap on the Circle Pad ZIF socket. Slide the ribbon cable out of the socket.

Remove Circle Pad Assembly
1 minLift the Circle Pad joystick module away from the motherboard. Remove the small rubber washer sitting beneath it if present.

Transfer Joystick Cap
2 minPush the plastic Circle Pad cap out through the front of the housing and swap it to the replacement module if needed.

Connect Replacement Cable
2 minSlide the new Circle Pad ribbon cable flat into the open ZIF socket. Flip the locking lever down to lock the cable in place.

Secure Circle Pad Assembly
2 minAlign the replacement module over its screw posts and reinstall the two Phillips #00 screws until snug.

Reconnect Shoulder Ribbons
3 minPosition the rear housing close to the motherboard and press both shoulder button ribbon cable connectors back into their sockets.

Reassemble Rear Housing
4 minSnap the lower housing back into position, reinsert the ten body screws, replace the battery, and secure the battery cover.
After your Nintendo 3DS controller repair
Power the 3DS back on and test the controller repair function before you put every screw away. Check touch/display response, charging, cameras, buttons, and wireless as relevant to this repair. If something fails after closing the device, reopen carefully and reseat the connectors for this Nintendo 3DS job before assuming the part is defective. Keep leftover adhesive and screws labeled in case you need a second pass.
