Step-by-step

Loosen the battery cover screws
1 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to loosen the two captive screws securing the battery cover along the top edge.

Pry off the battery cover
1 minInsert a plastic opening pick into the notch at the top corner and lift the cover off the console.

Remove the battery pack
1 minUse a plastic spudger to lift the battery out of its compartment from the lower notch.

Eject the SD card and stylus
1 minPush inward on the SD card to release it, then pull out both the card and the stylus.

Unscrew the lower outer case
3 minRemove the six Phillips #00 screws securing the lower housing, including the two located inside the battery compartment.

Separate the lower housing
2 minGently lift the lower housing away from the console, opening it like a clamshell toward the hinge.

Disconnect the shoulder button ribbons
2 minUse tweezers to carefully lift the left and right shoulder button ribbon cable connectors straight off the motherboard.

Remove the Wi-Fi module
2 minPry the Wi-Fi board straight up from the motherboard connector using the flat end of a spudger.

Unbolt the Circle Pad assembly
2 minRemove the two Phillips #00 screws securing the Circle Pad joystick module to the motherboard.

Disconnect the Circle Pad ribbon cable
2 minFlip up the retaining latch on the ZIF connector using a spudger and pull the Circle Pad ribbon out.

Release the upper screen ZIF connectors
3 minCarefully flip up the black locking flaps on the large ribbon connectors along the top edge of the board.

Disconnect the camera and speaker ribbon cables
2 minSlide the upper screen display, camera, and speaker ribbon cables out of their unlocked connectors.

Unscrew the motherboard
2 minRemove the four Phillips #00 screws holding the motherboard to the plastic inner frame.

Tilt the motherboard open
2 minCarefully tilt the motherboard up from the top edge to reveal the lower screen ribbon connected underneath.

Disconnect the lower display ribbon cable
2 minFlip open the ZIF connector latch on the underside of the motherboard and pull the ribbon cable free.

Extract the motherboard
1 minLift the motherboard clear of the chassis and set it on an anti-static mat.
